Title: Conservation Vs Efficiency
1Energy Conservation Efficiency
One hundred years ago, the Boy Scouts were an
organization that taught leadership through
camping and outdoor experiences. Now what used to
be a three person conservation staff to encompass
conservation and natural resources policy for the
nation has diminished into no specifically
assigned employee working on conservation issues.
It seems that in the last decade especially,
national organizations have turned their
attention to programs that are in sync with the
latest technological advances in order to attract
more members or renewed interest in their
organization. While this is all well and good, it
is difficult for me to understand where all that
interest in conservation that previously started
huge conservation discussions on a national level
went.
2The bottom line is that at our summer camps we
are discussing the necessity for wireless
connectivity in order to offer more diverse Merit
Badges and integrate technology into the summer
camp experience. Some of these initiatives are
definitely progressing the camps into the future,
but the resources that once were dedicated to
conservation efforts are being re-allocated
toward these efforts. At the same time the Boy
Scouts are introducing a Sustainability Merit
Badge, conservation programming at the National
Jamboree has been greatly reduced and interest in
conservation at the Council level is decreasing
because such programs are not eye-catching enough
and do not increase membership, membership being
the item that brings in money.
3A lot of these policies, for better or worse, do
make sense. I understand that the organization
ceases to exist if there is no money and
declining membership hurts conservation
programming just as much as other areas of focus.
The part that I find interesting is why new
initiatives are being funded by sacrificing
conservation programming. With "green" companies
growing at insane rates, virtually everyone
recognizing that climate change is occurring
regardless of how it is being caused, and LEED
efficient building design certification being
completed on more than a third of newly
constructed buildings, it is difficult to
understand why we decided to jump ship on the
environmental movement right as it is becoming
all the rage. Identifying the fact that young
adults know almost nothing about their natural
habitat or conservation is probably the most
important step towards doing something about it.
4The actual possible actions for increasing
conservation awareness are reserved for another
piece, but there must be recognition that not all
initiatives should be undertaken because some
survey said they would increase interest and
money in an organization. In fact, the curious
thing is that as I have been educating people in
Scouting and members of the public about the
William T. Hornaday Conservation Awards, they are
all EZ Battery Reconditioning Review extremely
interested because there is a complete lack of
awareness that this recognition exists. That
interest in conservation that supposedly does not
really exist has produced a half-dozen Hornaday
projects in my region in the past year. Even
those who do not wish to spend thousands of hours
doing the work are eager to spread the
information and help out as they can. As such, it
appears to me that conservation interest, should
it be fostered, will only increase and strengthen
other education efforts, including the recent
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics) push. After all, conservation
science is a science. http//quantumvisionsystemr
