Title: VV Minerals India Stays Optimistic Despite Media Ignorance
1VV Minerals India Stays Optimistic Despite Media
Ignorance
2VV Minerals India has found itself at the centre
of beach sand mining scam. Much has been covered
by the media, tarnishing the image of a reputed
company and its founder. The media has been
indifferent to several developments that have
been ruled in favour of National Award winning
company.

3For instance, the High Court of Madras had
reserved its judgement in a case filed by S
Vaikundarajan, founder of VV Mineral Mining,
challenging an order of the Centre cancelling his
licence. This piece of information was neither
covered in print media nor in electronic media.

4No reports on the original petition or latest
developments are to be found across the internet.
Most newspapers have carried a bland headline
accusing the company without any substantial
evidence.

5Not long ago, AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha herself
stated that Vaikundarajan was being pressured by
the government to sell his shares. Furthermore,
cases were being finagled against him and the
company was forced to shut down by the State
Pollution Control Board and the Department of
Mining and Geology.

6Established in 1989, VV Minerals is Indias
largest mining, manufacturer and exporter of
garnet and ilmenite. It has achieved a
significant market share in Europe, Middle East,
East Asia, Australia and USA. VVM is the first
private company to hold granted license for
mining and exporting of ilmenite from the
Government of India. Despite several achievements
in the export business, VVM faces a string of
baseless accusations.

7The State Government set up an investigating
committee to look into the matter. Following some
developments, the National Green Tribune ordered
a ban on beach sand mining activities in Tamil
Nadu and Kerala. Following these circumstances,
Vaikundarajan approached the High Court with a
plea to quash the central government order.

8VV Mineral officials have repeatedly stated the
impact of this ban on Indian firms. The ban is
said to cost an annual loss of around Rs 300
crore to the state exchequer.
While the investigating committee is yet to reach
its conclusion, it is only unfair to pass a
judgement against the committee before the court
reaches its verdict. Meanwhile, Vaikundarajan has
extended his support to the committee and
believes that justice will prevail.
