Welcome To The Finchley Clinic

  • Many of the medicines we are prescribed for a
whole range of conditions are synthetic versions
    of natural products.
  • An obvious example is the willow tree bark that
was taken by the ancient Greeks two and a half
thousand years ago to help with a number of
ailments. We now know this product as aspirin.
  • Some of the even older products are opiates that
have been taken for thousands of years and even
helped the British Empire grow as they legally
    traded in opium to China.

  • Anaesthetics are by-products of opiates and
penicillin that has saved the lives of millions
over the last century is a bacterium.
  • So it should not come as a surprise to find there
are plenty more naturally occurring products that
are still taken to help with good health. In
particular many are aimed at restoring and
    maintaining a healthy gut.
  • Problems in the digestive system can cause any
number of ailments. In fact, many health
professionals believe that all illness stems from
problems in this part of the body.
  • Early humans are referred to as hunter-gatherers.
They were mostly nomads following the season to
gather food whether game or plants. In the full
time of our existence agriculture is relatively
    very recent.

5
  • After generations of trying everything that grew
wild the human race learnt what was edible and
what was poison. Think of the people that
whittled down the small number of edible fungi
with some dying for the cause.
  • As time passed it must have become gradually
known that certain wild plants were good for
particular conditions. Some plants such as
bayberry offered great relief to certain
digestion difficulties but only some of the plant
    and not the poisonous part.
  • The good in this plant was extracted and offered
as a health supplement but it was recently banned
in the EU presumably because some suits decided
they didnt know what part of the plant was
poisonous so chucked it all out.

6
  • Luckily there is another plant that has also been
eaten for thousands of years in warmer parts of
the world and this is one of the wild endive
family. Endive has various names in different
countries and the cultivated one is the small
pointed green salad found in good greengroceries.
  • Part of the wild endive has been used to help a
number of digestive issues for a long time but if
you want to know why its OK to sell this and not
the banned plant youll have to write to Brussels
and wait for a reply. But dont hold your breath.
  • Those ancients took a lot of risks to eliminate
poisonous plants and seek out the healthy ones
but there may be another aspect to this.

7
  • Bacteria in our gut is essential to digestion and
immune system building. Is it just a coincidence
that when the plants were pulled from the ground
and unwashed just eaten and that soil is richer
in bacteria than virtually any other part of the
    planet?
