• For most of the 20th century, cannabis (aka
  marijuana) was viewed by most as nothing more
  than a recreational drug. As researchers
  performed more studies of its effects, however,
  they discovered that when used properly, cannabis
  can relieve the symptoms for people suffering
  from a variety of serious medical conditions.
  These conditions include

• According to a study published in Molecular
  Cancer Therapeutics, cannabis can slow or stop
  the spread of cancer cells in the body. Cannabis
  has the ability to turn off the gene called Id-1,
  which decreases the potential for the spread of
  tumors. The American Association for Cancer
  Research currently recognizes that cannabis can
  help treat tumor growth in the brain, breast, and
  lungs.1

• There is currently no cure for the HIV/AIDS
  virus, but studies have shown that cannabis can
  relieve many of the symptoms associated with
  being HIV positive. One study found that
  marijuana reduced neuropathic pain, while another
  found it helped patients eat and sleep better,
  and generally improved their day-to-day mood.2

• As with HIV, Alzheimers disease has no cure.
  However, a study by the Scripps Research
  Institute found that THC (the active ingredient
  in cannabis) can slow the diseases progression.
  By blocking the brain enzyme that produced
  amyloid plaques, THC slows the rate at which
  these plaques kill brain cells.1

• In a study of 58 patients suffering from
  arthritis, the use of marijuana derivatives
  reduced pain and allowed patients to get better
  sleep. Another study confirmed that cannabis can
  help treat arthritis by showing that it may help
  reduce the inflammation associated with the
  disease.1

• The NYU Langone Medical Center conducted tests
  using marijuana extract to treat adults and
  children who suffer from epileptic seizures. The
  result a 50 reduction in the frequency of
  certain types of seizures in children and adults
  alike.2

Multiple Sclerosis

• Multiple sclerosis patients suffer from a variety
  of debilitating symptoms, including pain,
  tremors, stiffness, and muscle spasms. While
  tests have been limited, evidence so far suggests
  that cannabis can offer some relief from all of
  these symptoms in both animals and humans.2

• Like multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons disease is a
  painful condition that causes tremors in the
  muscles. Studies in Israel have shown that
  smoking marijuana can have serious benefits for
  Parkinsons patients, reducing both the pain and
  tremors associated with the disease and even
  improving fine motor skills and the ability to
  sleep.1
