• San Francisco offers many popular tourist
  attractions. Museums are often on the top of
  tourists lists when coming to San Francisco. Here
  is a list of just a few museums San Francisco has
  to offer and a little bit of information about
  each one.

Alcatraz Island

• Located one and a half miles off of San
  Francisco's shore line, Alcatraz served as a
  federal prison for thirty years. Now tourists
  flock to the prison to tour the cells of former
  in mates. A private ferry will take you to and
  from the island, which is part of the U.S.
  National Park Service.

The California Academy of Sciences

• The California Academy of Sciences, also
  known as Cal Academy, is one of the largest
  natural history museums in the world. Cal Academy
  is also unique because it offers an only adult
  option on Thursday nights, so, if you don't want
  to go at the same time as kids, make plans to go
  after six. Founded in 1893, they offer a variety
  of exhibits that are sure to excite people of all
  ages, including a fully enclosed rain forest
  exhibit.

Exploratorium

• The Exploratorium is a hands-on Science
  Museum. They offer over six hundred exhibits, all
  just waiting to be explored. They have six
  separate galleries that are open for exploration.
  There is also a restaurant that you can eat at
  before moving on to the next gallery or before
  leaving.

Asian Art Museum

• The Asian Art Museum opened in 1966 and
  features over 18,000 works of art. These works
  range in age with the oldest being somewhere
  around 6,000 years old. Because of this, the
  museum is not just an art museum, but a museum
  for the history and culture of Asia. It is one of
  the most comprehensive collections of Asian art
  known. All of the major seven Asian regions are
  represented in the collection.

Children's Creativity Museum

• The Children's Creativity Museum is located
  in the Yerba Buena Gardens. The museum is best
  known for allowing children of all ages to create
  their media. There are five studios in the museum
  - Animator's Studio, Digital Workshop, Main
  Gallery, Music Production Lab, and Studio Z. Each
  of these studios allows visitors to let their
  imaginations run wild. For example, in the Main
  Gallery visitors can make their masks or play
  dress-up.

Musee Mecanique

• The Musee Mecanique is located at Pier 49 in
  Fisherman's Wharf. It is the largest collection
  of antique arcade games and musical instruments.
  The best part is that the arcade games are all
  still fully functional. It has been featured in
  many movies, such as Princess Dairies.
