How to Reduce Hazardous Industrial Waste

Description:

| Hundreds of thousands of tons of hazardous waste is produced in the U.S. every year, much of it by American businesses. When a business produces hazardous waste, it is responsible for identifying the proper ways of disposing of it. This can be made easier by partnering with responsible recycling businesses, and by identifying ways to reduce the production of waste on the job. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

  • Here in the U.S., we produce a lot of waste.
According to the EPA, American households produce
an average of 530,000 tons of hazardous household
waste every year, an average of 4 tons per person
per year.1 Despite being home to less than 5 of
the worlds population, the U.S. produces 25 of
the worlds total waste, more than any other
    country.2

3
  • In addition to waste produced by American
households, U.S. businesses also produce a large
amount of hazardous waste every year. When a
business handles toxic material or produces
dangerous waste as part of its production
process, it is the responsibility of that
business to make sure any hazardous waste it has
generated is disposed of properly and according
    to relevant regulations.

4
  • There are several kinds of waste that are
classified as hazardous waste, according to their
physical properties, how toxic they are, and
other important factors. Classifications of toxic
    waste include
  • Listed wastes waste as classified by the EPA
regarding different properties and points of
    origin.
  • Characteristic wastes waste that is not
included in a specific EPA list but still
    displays hazardous qualities.
  • Universal wastes waste that are commonly used
    by businesses and households.
  • Mixed wastes includes more than one type of
    waste.

5
  • Listed wastes are those included on the EPAs
lists of hazardous material, which divide
hazardous wastes into categories according to
point of origin, and each comes with its own set
    of regulations regarding disposal
  • F-List or non-specific source wastes. F-list
    hazardous waste includes solvents, cleaning
agents, and other materials commonly used across
a variety of industries and thus come from
    non-specific sources.
  • K-List or source-specific wastes. Waste that
is produced by specific industries, such as
    pesticides, chemical leftovers from petroleum
    refining, etc.
  • P-List U-List discarded commercial chemical
compounds, such as unused pharmaceuticals and
    unused chemicals.

6
  • Not all hazardous wastes fall into one of the
specific EPA lists. Even if a potentially
hazardous material is not specifically included
on one of the EPA lists, it still needs to be
discarded or recycled in a safe and eco-friendly
    manner. These characteristic wastes include
waste that is ignitable (flammable), corrosive,
toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin,
or that can produce harmful reactions.

7
  • When people think hazardous waste, they often
think exotic chemical compounds and other
byproducts of industry. But some of the most
common types of hazardous wastes called
universal wastes are items regularly used
around the house and the office, such as
    batteries, light bulbs, consumer-grade
pesticides, and electronics which contain toxic
materials such as lithium and mercury.

8
  • If your business produces hazardous waste, it is
your responsibility to make sure that it is
disposed of safely. The best way to make sure
hazardous waste is being properly disposed of is
to partner with a responsible recycling/waste
    disposal company. These hazardous waste
specialists can help you identify hazardous
materials, give you tips on how to handle those
materials, and even help you save money by
adopting policies that produce less harmful waste.

9
  • One simple way that businesses can reduce waste
and save money is to partner with a uniform and
textile rental company. According to a TRSA
study, 70 of industrial worksites report that
renting reusable textiles helped them reduce
solid waste and become more environmentally
sustainable, while also providing them with
better quality supplies. Additionally, 80 said
that renting textiles helped them save money.3

  • Prudential Overall Supply is an industry leader
when it comes to rental work uniforms and
textiles. As a part of the Clean Green movement,
we partner with fellow businesses to help them
reduce waste and become more eco-friendly. Learn
