• In Alberta, from a legal point of view, a gay or
  lesbian couple shares the same rights as a
  heterosexual couple.

• The process and procedure of estate planning in
  Canada for gay and lesbian couples are
  no different. A more relevant factor may be
  whether or not the couple has children.

What if the couple has kids?

• A couple with adult children can appoint one or
  more of them as alternate representatives.

What if the couple has kids?

• Any of the children may inherit any of the
  properties appointed by their parents.

What if the couple has no kids?

• A childless couple may appoint adult nieces and
  nephews, or even younger adult friends, as
  alternate executors for the wills.

• They can also appoint alternate attorneys for the
  powers of attorney, and alternate representatives
  for the personal directives.
