2Bioactive glass
- The first bioactive glass (Silicon dioxide
)SiO2(, Sodium oxide ) Na2O(, Calcium oxide
)CaO(, and Phosphorus pentoxide )P2O5)( was
invented by Larry Hench at the University of
Florida in 1969.
- The original Bioactive glass has been used in
more than a million patients to repair bone
defects in the jaw and in orthopaedics Hench,
2011.
- According to different reports, bioactive glass
can be attached to soft tissue or hard tissue
through chemical bonds(Fooladi 2013).
3A-Mechanism of bioactive glasses bioactivity
Ca2 ions are rapidly exchanged with H ions at
the reactive surface. Water (H2O) reacts to form
SiOH (silanol bond) groups at the reactive
surface. SiOH groups at the surface induce
apatite nucleation. The apatite crystals grow
spontaneously by incorporating ions from the body
fluid. By increasing PH , this process accelerate
4B- Ionic dissolution products and osteogenesis
- Once the Apatite layer has formed, the next
stages are that proteins adsorb to this layer,
and cells attach, differentiate and produce bone
matrix - Ideally, bioactive glass implants would recruit
osteoprogenitor cells in vivo and activate a
bone differentiation pathway. - In a microarray study, when human fetal
osteoblasts were exposed to Bioglass dissolution
products, genes associated with osteoblast
differentiation were up-regulated. - significant up-regulation of Runx2, Osterix(Osx),
Dlx5, collagen I, ALP and bone sialoprotein
(BSP) .
