Report Description
China Driving the Global Phenol Market The
global phenol market is expected to grow at a
CAGR of around 4 during 2015-2020 with
bisphenol-A (BPA), phenolic resins and
caprolactam representing its major application
sectors. Phenol is an aromatic organic compound
which is widely used as a precursor or an
intermediate in the chemical industry.
Represented by the chemical formula C6H5OH,
phenol is similar to alcohols as the phenyl group
(C6H5) in it is bonded to a hydroxyl group (OH).
The stronger hydrogen bonding in phenol enhances
its solubility and results in a higher melting
and boiling point compared to other hydrocarbons
with similar molecular weight. Phenol was first
isolated from coal tars in the 1850s and is
currently produced by the oxidation of cumene.
This process is advantageous over other
production processes such as the Dow process as
it gives another valuable industrial chemical-
acetone. Phenol is used in the production of a
number of chemicals like- bisphenol-A (BPA),
phenolic resins, caprolactam, alkylphenols,
aniline, 2,6-xylenol, etc. The first three
derivatives- bisphenol-A (BPA), phenolic resins
and caprolactam currently consume the majority of
its total global production. BPA end applications
include automotive parts, optical media,
glazing/sheeting, etc. Phenolic resins are
primarily used as a binder or coating for
oriented strand boards (OSB) or for plywood. In
addition, they are used for circuit boards as
well as molded products. Caprolactam, the third
biggest derivative of phenol is used in textiles,
carpets, engineered plastics, packaging and
industrial filament applications. Another major
factor driving the global phenol market is the
rising demand for wind turbines with their blades
made up of epoxy resins that are derived from
phenol.
