Weve been warned about it for twenty years but
the excessive prescription of antibiotics by UK
GPs is showing definite signs of antimicrobial
resistance. You cant blame the doctors that are
often under pressure from some of their own
patients that demand antibiotics for any number
of frequently minor ailments. But the figure
released today suggests that one in four
prescriptions for antibiotics, or put another
way, ten million a year are unnecessary.

The simple problem is that antibiotics kill the
good and the bad bacteria we carry around inside
of us and nobody really knows what will happen
when the bad have learnt to resist the treatment
and multiply to put all our bacteria out of
balance. There is no definitive figure for the
number of different strains of bacteria we
harvest in our gut but the estimate is somewhere
between five hundred and a thousand. Each strain
has trillions of members in its club and the
combined weight in an adult is anywhere between
two and two and a half kilos.

Some are good and some are bad but somehow they
all keep to their usual levels without exploding
out of control most of the time. One of the most
obvious exceptions is the candida albicans that
often gets out of control with a number of people
on a recurring basis. This particular yeast
normally lives in our gut without giving any
problem but out of control it causes pain and
embarrassment with a white excretion at both ends
of the alimentary canal. These outbursts are
often linked to poor diet and also emphasises the
need to keep a clean colon that most of these
related supplements provide.

Not taking antibiotics unless it is absolutely
essential to prevent a particularly bad illness
or injury should be the aim of us all. If you
cannot avoid a long course of antibiotics then it
may help to top up with good gut bacteria such as
found in live yoghurt or Kefir. A supplement
available from The Finchley Clinic called Optibac
probiotics releases beneficial bacteria in the
intestines where most bacteria live and
work. Bacteria in the gut is essential for the
final breakdown of certain foods thus preparing
the way for the lining of the intestine to absorb
all the goodness in the way of nutrients we get
from our food.

In another topical news piece today a report
suggests that after a long trial with pregnant
women it has been found that there is a definite
link between a healthy balance of bacteria and a
poor one that could lead to premature birth. The
finding has led to the suggestion that pregnant
women in the near future may be screened for
bacteria and some will be given specially
formulated probiotic tablets. These tablets will
contain some of the bacteria found in truly
organic yoghurt though most supermarket yoghurt
is sterilized and none of the good bacteria exist.
