The Acid Loving Milk Bacterium
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus is a bit of a mouthful
but the literal translation from Latin is a lot
easier to say and remember. It translates to acid
loving milk bacterium and is a strain of one of
the many types of bacteria in our gut.
  • No one knows exactly how many different bacteria
there are in the human body because they are
difficult to cultivate but between 500 and 1,000
    is the best estimate.

  • Collectively we each have trillions of them and
some of the useful ones are identified and named.
  • Biocare acidophilus is a supplement that helps
ferment sugars into lactic acid a subject that
you will know plenty about if you are a
    sportsperson or fitness fanatic.
  • Lactic acid is like a reserve energy supply and
kicks in when muscles are extremely tired.
Unfortunately it should always be a very short
term reserve and if you reach exhaustion and it
kicks in it is usually accompanied by muscle
    pain.

  • The esteemed Mayo Clinic has recently carried
many trials on different subjects with this
product from thrush sufferers to high cholesterol
and many other minor ailments. It clearly becomes
most active when it is released in the gut lining
as it has also been shown to effectively treat
    diarrhoea.
  • Many other intestinal problems such as IBS may
also benefit from the product and it can help
    many afflicted with lactose intolerance.
  • There must be a reason for the two kilos or so of
bacteria lining our gut but many strains are
still not understood. Certainly there are plenty
that aid digestion and even help release vitamins
like K and C for absorption through the
    intestinal lining.

  • Bacteria are often referred to as good or bad but
collectively they all keep are immune system
working. It is probable that babies in the womb
have no bacteria inside them although recent
research suggests there may be a very small
    amount.
  • But, as soon as the baby is born the invasion
begins through mouth and nose. Interestingly
there is a theory that caesarean birth means a
different set of airborne bacteria gets there
first as opposed to the bacteria from the more
    intimate parts of the mother.
  • This leads some researchers to suggest babies
born this way are more susceptible to certain
problems in later life as the first bacteria are
    considered essential for what follows.

  • The fact that all these bacteria exist in
relative harmony is all part of the mystery of
the subject but occasionally one or other will
get an upper hand and grow out of control. The
obvious example of this is the candida albicans
that reside in our intestine and can explode in
    number to cause thrush.
  • Biocare acidophilus should be taken with some
care as too much is as bad as too little in
achieving nothing so read the instructions
carefully and understand fully the reasons for
    taking it.
