1
How to Stay in Touch With Jewish Community
2
(No Transcript)
3
  • Find someone to work with
  • Find a Jewish friend, loved one, or even your
whole family. Encourage them with promises of
presents during Hanukkah, a Shabbat dessert, etc.
There also may be classes at your local temple.

4
  • Explain why you want to do this
  • You want to reconnect with your parents, who
were more religious perhaps you just want to
create more of a close-knit feeling of heritage
in your family. Whatever the case may be, explain
it to them so that they are aware your goals.

5
Understand the concepts behind Judaism
  • Talk to a Rabbi
  • Search the web for articles on Judaism
  • Take a class

6
Bring traditional Jewish food into your home
  • Apples and honey on Rosh Hashanah, latkes on
Chanukah, Challah on Shabbat - the list of Jewish
food ideas is endless. Do some research and
decide what foods you'd like to try most.

7
Attend synagogue services
  • Find out more about the synagogue and talk to
the Rabbi, if possible. The Rabbi and staff can
explain more than what can be covered in the
scope of this article, and may even offer you
free classes at the synagogue. There are numerous
options for incoming families and prospective
    members.

8
Recite the morning prayers
  • These are the Shema, the Amidah, and Aleinu.
These require learning, but you will catch on
very fast. Wear a Kippah, and, if you are
comfortable, a Tallit as well. These are symbolic
prayer items to help you get a deeper connection
    with God.

9
Observe the Shabbat
  • Refrain from driving or using electronics
during on Shabbat. Instead, have a Shabbat meal
every Friday night. Set the table with a nice
tablecloth, arrange a bouquet of flowers as a
centerpiece, and cook a homemade meal.

10
Observe the laws of Kashrut (keeping kosher)
  • There are levels of how strict or lenient these
laws are applied that vary from observer to
observer. Full observance is defined as never
eating dairy and meat products together, having
separate milk and meat dishes, and always
refraining from pork or shellfish. Some people
choose to keep kosher in the home, but not when
    eating out.

11
If you are doing this with your family, send your
children to Hebrew school
  • While this is more of a time commitment, they
can come home and teach you not only the language
but also Jewish customs, so you in turn are
learning as well. As a plus, your children may
    also make some new friends.

12
Take a trip to Israel
  • This is a big step, but if you have the time
and money, it will be a trip that you and your
    family will always remember.

13
