Title: Andrew Dismore standing for Hendon Constituency
1Ambitious, populist
Labour took away patient rights. They wont
answer the question on whether they will return
them. Direct question to candidate will you
commit to allow patients not to have forced
psychiatric treatment once a patient is detained
in so far as this is not necessary to prevent
harm to self or others. No response.
Predictable. This is not a vote winner, so not a
priority.
ANDREW DISMORE
Tardive dyskinesia - deformity of the face caused
by forced psychiatric medication
- Over the last three years, the number of people
given Electro Convulsive Therapy against consent
has risen by 25 to over 1,500 people a year. - Over 5,000 people are subject to community
treatment orders, where they are often force-ably
injected with medication that reduces life
expectancy significantly. - Under the 2007 Mental Health Act, a patient is
usually not able to stay in hospital without
forced psychiatric treatment. But once a patient
is in hospital, psychiatric treatment is not
necessary to prevent harm to self or others.
Test for State intervention under 2007 Act is
only availability of appropriate treatment.
This has made it much easier to give psychiatric
treatment. Forced treatment is on the rise.
All we have asked is that consent be required for
psychiatric treatment. Once a patient is in
hospital psychiatric treatment is not necessary
to prevent harm to self or others. But under
current legislation, consent is not required for
psychiatric treatment.
