Title: The West Island Denture Clinic
1Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures (sometimes called temporary
dentures ) are placed in the mouth immediately
after extraction of natural teeth. This approach
is used when someone does not want to be without
teeth for several months during the healing of
the gums sockets. During the healing process,
your gums that support the denture will shrink.
It is very important to keep all appointments for
dental care during this period because your
denture will require adjustments.
Immediate dentures are usually made before the
date of extraction. In this case the date of the
extractions should be set after the denture is
made. When you are getting your first dentures,
it is important to remember that it takes time to
get used to.
2Metallic Partial Denture
A partial denture consists of either a base
completely made of plastic resin used to support
artificial teeth or a metal frame base made of
chrome-cobalt or titanium (called frames) filled
with acrylic saddles supporting the replacement
teeth. The denture stays in place by using
brackets that attached to the natural teeth.
A partial with metallic frame has some abutments
on natural teeth and helps to prevent its gradual
penetration into the underlying mucosa, which
significantly limits the risk of gingivitis
around the residual natural teeth. More rigid and
stronger, it is a better choice in most cases. In
some clinical cases, it is possible to make a
partial denture over dental implants to increase
stability.
3Denture Reline
Relining consist to add new layer of pink plastic
inside the denture to fill the gap left by
bone/gums resorbtion. A gap under the denture is
oftenly filled with food and makes the denture
unstable creating pain and discomfort to the
gums. Prior to relining the prosthesis is cleaned
to improve the bonding of the new layer of
plastic over the old. The plastic layer is added
under the denture evenly to fill the empty
spaces. At the same time, the layer of plastic
will take the shape your gums and become the new
imprint. The new imprint will therefore allow the
denture to match the shape of your gums making it
more stable when chewing and improve the
retention of the denture in your mouth. This
method can be done in 1-2 hours.
Relining your dentures (denture) does not change
its appearance, it will only change its
adaptation in the mouth. Only the inside of the
denture is changed, the outer pink acrylic
structure will be preserved and the teeth remain
in the same place in the same arrangement.
4Denture Repairs
It is not always necessary to make new denture
when it is broken, worn out or if it is unstable.
Your denturist can quickly assess whether your
dentures must be repaired, relined or rebased. Do
not try to repair your denture by yourself this
could make the problem even worse. Your denturist
is the most qualified professional to repair your
denture.
A denturist can, in most cases repair your
denture and restore it to its original
appearance. Most repairs can usually be completed
the same day in one appointment.
