This Presentation...
  • The purpose of this presentation is to...
  • Detail the B-wing pilot costume standards for the
    Rebel Legion
  • Explain the B-wing pilot costume
  • Provide reference and information for the
construction of a B-wing pilot costume
  • Offer general B-wing pilot information

3
A/SF-01 B-wing Starfighter
  • Rebel Alliance fast attack bomber starfighter
  • Sometimes called the blade wing
  • Designed by Admiral Gial Ackbar and produced by
    Slayn Korpil
  • Wide array of heavy weapons and heavy shielding
    and armor
  • No astromech socket
  • Notoriously difficult to pilot B-wing pilots
were some of the best pilots in the Rebel Alliance

4
The B-wing Pilot
  • One of the most interesting pilot costumes in
    original trilogy
  • Very detailed (many small parts)
  • Distinctive red flightsuit/coveralls and gray
    flak vest (multi-colored fibers)
  • The helmet was designed to look like it held the
pilot's communication gear and was not intended
to appear as a protective piece of equipment

5
Notable Pilots
Nien Nunb
Ten Numb
Keyan Farlander Palso Thern
Poor confused pilot
Braylen Stramm
Gina Moonsong

bottom and two ribs near top, white 2 webbing
    side straps, squared back panel
  • 2 white webbing ejection harness that loops
around legs and attached to the tab of flak vest
  • Accurately sized and detailed chestbox, and hose
covered in white material, black shoulder straps
    and black side-release buckles

    helmet)

can be made even more accurately!

8
Flightsuit
  • Originally, Jaybrand Raceware white racing
    coveralls dyed red
  • Pockets added, zippers hidden or removed
  • What shade of red? Hard to say, each reference
picture has a different shade of red

10
Flightsuit
  • No commpad pocket (or commpad)
  • No code cylinder pocket
  • No rectangular pocket on right arm
  • No rear pockets
  • No visible zippers or Velcro closures
  • Only one set of leg pockets

11
Flak Vest
  • Medium or light gray material with multi-colored
    fibers (possibly emergency/disaster relief
    blanket)
  • Two ribs near top of front vest
  • Unique front vest shape and square back piece, 2
    white webbing side straps
  • Female end of 1 black plastic side-release
buckles attach to vest just below shoudler
straps. Buckles attach to vest via smooth black
clasps or simply by black webbing
  • Ejection harness sewn onto bottom tab
  • Greeblies near bottom of vest (two different set
    styles)

12
Ejection Harness
  • Harness made of same 2 white webbing as belt and
    vest side straps
  • Folded in half (half point stitched onto tab of
vest with two rows of stitching), ends loop
around the front of legs and come up in the back,
sliding under a flat sliver metal slide to be
    held in place.
  • Frayed ends of cut webbing should be coated in
glue so that they don't unravel.

13
Chestbox
  • Hard chestbox
  • There are at least four different styles
  • Accurate dimensions are 9 x 9
  • 1 black webbing straps attach it to flak vest
via male end of 1 black plastic side-release
    buckles
  • Hose attaches to bottom left side of chestbox and
end is tucked under flak vest. Hose covered in
    white material

14
Chestbox Stlye 1
  • Worn by Ten Numb (pre-production) and Keyan
    Farlander

15
Chestbox Style 1
  • Gray computer amp, similar to 201358-1 M series
    connector

BENDIX bulkhead connector (threaded exterior)
16
Chestbox Style 1 (Variation)
  • There is a known variation to this style of
chestbox with a different, long greeblie down the
center trench and a different type of greeblie on
    the side.

17
Chestbox Style 2
  • Worn by Palso Thern and various other pilots

18
Chestbox Style 3
  • Worn by Nien Nunb and various pilots
  • The greeblie in the trench is also one of the
parts of Admiral Ackbar's rank badge
  • The round connector-like piece on the vest looks
like a BENDIX connector but isn't, it is a solid
    piece with a flat face

19
Belt
  • Belt is 2 white webbing, same as ejection
    harness
  • Second layer of webbing on front, two triangular
    black safety stitches
  • Six flare loops on front right side (amount of
    silver flares optional)
  • 2 black plastic side-release buckle on back
  • Belt is worn over ejection harness

20
Belt Box
  • Hard plastic black box
  • Smaller box on front with various details
  • Computer plug-like piece on top of smaller box
  • Roughly 5.5 tall, 2.5 wide, 1 thick
  • Small white rectangle on right side of larger box
  • Attaches or clips to belt on front left
  • Also worn by A-wing and Y-wing pilots (A-wing
pilots alternatively have small red square on
    side instead of white)

21
Gaiters
  • Material is unknown (probably canvas, leather or
    vinyl)
  • Two ribs on front (material folded over, stitched
    down)
  • Black 1 side release buckle near ribs
  • Strap made of same material as gaiters, square
stitch in front center, ends sewn into seam on
    back
  • Roughly mid-calf length

22
Pilot Cap
  • Standard unmodified WWII AN-H-15 flight cap
  • Any leather color
  • Replica AN-H-15 with soft foam ear domes may be
preferred-- real cap may not fit under helmet
  • Cap made of brown leather or faux-leather (Nien
    Nunb/Ten Numb style) also acceptable
  • Cap is not required but is recommended

23
Boots and Gloves
  • Black leather gauntlet gloves (i.e. X-wing pilot,
    TIE pilot, etc.)
  • German jack boots (i.e. X-wing pilot, TIE pilot,
    etc.)

24
Helmet
  • Hard helmet
  • Designed to look like it holds the pilot's
    communication headset
  • Loosely based on the A-wing pilot helmet with top
    shield removed
  • Numerous different styles, no two helmets have
    same set of greeblies
  • Might not fit over authentic AN-H-15 (perhaps why
they are never worn together in Return of the
    Jedi)

Helmet Details
  • Three styles of visor...
  • Amber visor, silver/gray bracers on sides, two
    pin stripes near top
  • Yellow-green/clear gradient, silver/gray side
bracers and crown, thick pin stripe at center
  • Crimson/clear gradient, silver/gray side bracers
and crown, thick pin stripe at center
  • ...Or not visor at all!
  • Visors are actually the top shield of an A-wing
pilot helmet molded in transparent plastic!
  • Four colors of edge trim...
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Red-brown
  • Light golden brown

To Wrap Up...
  • The B-wing pilot costume is a unique costume with
some very interesting and detailed parts. While
it can be a challenge to put together once
completed it is a fun costume to wear. With it's
large chestbox and unique helmet it will
    definitely turn some heads!
