About Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical disc replacement is a surgical procedure
which involves removing a damaged or degenerated
cervical disc with an artificial disc device.
The surgery is done with the intent to preserve
motion at the artificial disc device.
It is an alternative to the use of bone grafts,

Indications for Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery

The indications for cervical replacement are the
same as for cervical discectomy and fusion. The
indications generally include arm pain, weakness
or numbness of cervical spine with some degrees
of neck pain. The symptoms are due to herniated
disc or osteophytes compressing adjacent nerves
or spinal cord. This condition usually occurs at
cervical spine levels C4-5, C5-6 or C6-7.

The ideal candidates must meet certain criteria
before being admitted into a clinical trial, such
as
- The candidates must have undergone a trial of
non operative treatment for at least 4 to 6 weeks
- Have had no prior neck surgery
- Must be deemed a good surgical candidate

The cervical disc replacement operation is
performed under general anaesthesia. For cervical
disc replacement, an anterior approach to the
cervical spine is used. A horizontal incision of
3-5 cm is made on one side of the neck. The
damaged disc is exposed and removed. The damaged
disc is then completely removed along with the
impinging disc fragments or osteophytes. The disc
space is distracted to its normal disc height to
decompress the nerves. After removal of the disc,
the disc replacement device is sized and placed
between the vertebrae. Fluoroscopy is used to
facilitate proper positioning of disc replacement
implant.

The patients are discharged home the same day or
next morning. The cervical spine is immobilized
in a cervical collar for up to a week depending
upon surgeons decision. Pain, numbness and
weakness are dramatically improved within hours
of the surgery. In some cases it may take weeks
or months to recover completely. X-rays are done
to confirm proper positioning of the cervical
disc device. The patient can resume light work
within a week or two of surgery or by six weeks
following the surgery.
