Benefits and Uses of Lemongrass Essential Oil
2
  • There are many healthy natural products that are
on the market today thanks to our expanding
    global economy.
  • What was once regional medicine and health
benefits are now being enjoyed around the world.
  • One of the more interesting substances that have
grown in popularity in recent years is lemongrass
    essential oil.

3
What is Lemongrass Essential Oil?
  • Lemongrass is not lemons, but a grass that
actually has a similar smell although it is
    milder and far less sour.
  • This substance is used in many beverages as well
as desserts and other treats as well.
  • Lemongrass makes an excellent substitute for
lemons when they cannot be readily found or if a
    sweeter, milder taste is desired.

4
The essential oil that is derived from lemongrass
includes the following substances
  • Citronellal and Myrcene
  • Geranyl Acetate and Nerol Geraniol
  • Neral, Citral and Limonene
  • These elements form the basis of the lemongrass
essential oil which offers many benefits.

5
How is It Created?
  • A process known as steam distillation extracts
    the essential oil from lemongrass.
  • The grass is dried first and then exposed to
steam to pull out the essential oils.
  • Lemongrass is a widely used product in Thai and
Chinese recipes because of its taste and
    availability.
  • The grass itself grows very quickly and it is a
very common item in the street markets, fetching
a good price for shop owners.

6
The Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oils
  • As a medicinal benefit, the essential oil of
lemongrass does a great deal to promote good
health and wellbeing while treating many
    different conditions.
  • In addition, it can be used safely in
aromatherapy and can be consumed as well.
However, it must be noted that it may irritate
the skin and should not be used around the eyes
    or by pregnant women.

7
Antiseptic, Antibacterial Antimicrobial
  • This triple threat makes lemongrass one of the
best natural substances to fight a series of all
    types of infections.
  • It inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungus and
microbes that can be used topically to treat cuts
and abrasions and internally to help stop
bacterial infections of the stomach, colon and
    urinary tracts.
  • In addition, lemongrass essential oils can be
used in aromatherapy to help stop infections of
    the respiratory system as well.
  • Plus, the antimicrobial properties help cure food
poisoning, skin diseases, malaria, typhoid and
    even bad body odor.

8
Analgesic
  • In addition to removing infections, lemongrass
also reduces pain and inflammation as well.
  • This means greater pain relief for the joints and
muscles as well as headaches and even toothaches.
  • For athletes, lemongrass essential oil is a great
way to recover from strenuous activities that
    affect the muscles.

9
Antidepressant
  • As part of aromatherapy whether with an essential
oil diffuser or a soy candle that uses the
essential oil of lemongrass, the effect it has on
the mind when inhaled is one of confidence, hope
    and uplift.
  • All the stresses of the day and events that can
negatively affect the mindset are reduced and
even taken away by the power of lemongrass.
  • This is because lemongrass helps boost the
chemicals in the brain that control mood which
brings an uplifting effect when inhaled.

10
Astringent
  • Lemongrass is also a natural astringent, which
restricts blood flow. This can be very important
if someone is injured and bleeding profusely.
  • In non-emergency situations, the astringent
qualities helps improve the muscles, skin, hair
follicles and even the gums by tightening them up
and thus preventing the falling out of teeth and
    hair.

11
Diuretic
  • Lemongrass essential oil will actually increase
your urination, which is actually a good thing as
your body will lose more fat, improve your
digestion and prevent the formation of excess gas
    as well.
  • By reducing the excess amount of water in the
body, you will also reduce swelling and take some
of the pressure off of your joints. In addition,
increased urination will help to detoxify the
body as well and reduce overall blood pressure.

12
You can also combine the essential oil of
lemongrass with other essential oils as well,
such as the following
  • Basil and Cedar Wood
  • Coriander and Geranium
  • Jasmine and Lavender
  • Lavandin and Tea Tree
  • The essential oils can also be used in an
essential oil diffuser to fill the room with the
    scent of lemongrass.
