Price of Almonds Going Up

• However, almond trees are also one of the
  thirstiest trees, requiring far more water for
  irrigation than cotton or other crops. As a
  result, the drought has hit California almond
  farmers particularly hard. Quite simply, theres
  just not enough water to support the industry as
  it stands today. Drastic measures have been
  called for-and implemented by some desperate
  farmers. Sources quoted farmer Barry Baker, CEO
  of Firebaughs Baker Farming Company, as saying
  he had begun to destroy at least 20 of his
  current orchards.Theres simply not enough water
  to satisfy 5,000 acres, he says. Hopefully I
  wonthave to take out another 20 percent.With
  almonds beloved by consumers all over the world,
  demand is not expected to lessen anytime soon,
  despite Californias weather conditions. The
  price may drive farmers in other countries to try
  their own hand at growing the crop, with Spain
  and Australian agricultural experts calling for
  their own farmers to grow almond trees themselves.
