Title: Ketchup with Ford’s New Research
1With Fords New Research
2- Cars and tomatoes arent normally thought to go
together. That may all be changing. The Ford
Motor Company and H.J. Heinz Company are joining
forces to see if they can create a greener
future.
3Tomatoes Cars
- Researchers at these two powerhouse companies are
exploring the possibilities of unused tomato
fibers. Hopefully they can develop a sustainable
composite material that could be used in the
automotive industry. One option is creating wire
baskets and storage bins from dried tomato skins.
4- "Our goal is to develop a strong, lightweight
material that meets our vehicle requirements,
while at the same time reducing our overall
environmental impact." - Ellen Lee, a Ford plastics research technical
specialist
5Leftovers
- Over 2 MILLION TONS of tomatoes are squeezed for
Heinz ketchup every year. The results are
delicious but also leave behind a lot of stems,
skins, and seeds. Ford is hoping to create a
bio-plastic that could decrease its reliance on
petroleum-based parts.
6Bio-plastics
- A few examples
- Rice hulls for electric cowl brackets
- Cellulose fibers to reinforce console components
- Coconut-based composite materials
- Soy-foam for cushions and head restraints
- This isnt the first time Ford has utilized
plant-based materials in their automobiles. The
company already has 8 materials currently in
production.
7Although we are in the very early stages of
research, and many questions remain, we are
excited about the possibilities this could
produce for both Heinz and Ford, and the
advancement of sustainable 100 plant-based
plastics.
- Vidhu Nagpal, associate director, packaging RD
for Heinz.
8New Technology
- Ford is excited to partner with Heinz in its
commitment to reduce, reuse, and recycle. In
addition to these great plant-based plastics,
Ford is also launching a vehicle that emits water
vapor instead of carbon dioxide.

11Summary
- Nobody thinks of tomatoes when talking about car
parts that is all about to change. Ford and
Heinz are partnering to find a way to make car
parts from bio-plastics. Heres what we know so
far.
