  • DEEPAVALI, the term is originated from
    Sanskrit, synthesized of two words DEEP
    AWALI meaning ROW OF LIGHTS. The word used
    for this festival is because deepvali is a
    festival of lights.
  • People across the globe celebrate this
    festival by lighting up the traditional lamps
    diyas fueled with oil, candles and neon lights.

  • Significance
  • The festival is observed to commemorate the
    return of Lord Rama, accompanied by wife Sita and
    brother Laksman, after 14 years exile. People of
    Ayodhya had welcomed Lord Rama and his family by
    lighting up the earthen diyas to dispel the
    darkness and to mark the victory of good over
    evil, i.e.
  • Lord Rama defeating the wicked demon Ravana.

  • Festival comprised of 6 days celebration
    Govatsa Dvadashi, Dhanteras, Naraka
    Chaturdasi, DIWALI, Indian New Year and Bhai
    Dooj.

  • Govatsa Dvadashi is a day to worship the
    cows and theirs calves in the evening.
  • Puja and sweets are offered to the cows.
    Kumkum tilak is marked on their foreheads.

  • Dhanteras is the day to worship the Goddess
    Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, praying for wealth and
    prosperity. An oil bath is also taken by women as
    it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi blesses them
    on performing such rituals.
  • Naraka Chaturdasi is the day signifying Lord
    Krishnas victory over demon Naraka. Similar to
    dhanteras, this day also has a ritual for men
    to take an oil bath to receive blessing from the
    Goddess Lakshmi.

  • Diwali It is a public holiday across the
    country. People offer puja in early mornings
    and then have a delicious breakfast.
  • Processions of Goddess Lakshmi are held on the
    streets by people carrying statues of the
    goddess. Kids enjoy sharing sweets and toys with
    their friends and relatives.
  • People exchange gifts and share sweets too
    among themselves

  • People buy new clothes and footwear. They
    clean their houses and decorate it with torans,
    lamps and colorful rangolis. Houses are lightened
    up with series of electric lamps.

    of diwali is celebrated as Indian New Year.
    Buisnessmen start their new businesses on this
    particular day.

    ledger books and start the business with a new
    record book.
  • People wear new clothes and visit their
    friends and relatives to wish happy Deepavali
    2014 .
