Title: Task 1 photgrapers and anlysing photos
1Task 1 analysing photos
By Bethany Thomas
2David La ChapelleLand scape photography
This photo is from a collection that David La
Chapelle created after moving from fashion
photography to non-commercial work. The
industrial buildings and pumping stations were
all crafted from materials that come from these
outlets. They represent the use and consumption
of oil that we are addicted to. The photo above
was taken in the rainforest of La Chapelle
hometown in Maui. The light in this photo is
both natural and unnatural. The natural light is
the sunset coming from the left hand side. The
unnatural light is the light that is coming off
the gas station. The sunlight is a more soft
light compared to the harsh light of the
artificial light. There is a repetition of the
shape of the pumps on the gas station this could
convey the unnaturalness of the gas station
compared to natures unique designs for every
individual leaf or plant that is in the photo.
3Annie Leibovitz Celebrity portraits
This photo was taken in 1980 and Annie was
originally mean to photo only John Lennon but he
insisted that Yoko Ono be in it too. Her vision
was to recreate the kissing scene from the cover
of the album Double fantasy. She had john remove
his clothes, but Annie told Yoko to leave her
clothes on. This photo is the last professionally
took photo of John Lennon as five hours later he
was shot and killed. The main intention of this
photo was to recreate an album cover. Once the
photo was taken it represented the relationship
between John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The lighting in
this photo is very soft and gives it a look that
it may have been painted rather than taken on a
Polaroid camera. The angle of is a birds eye
view and was taken from above the people in the
photo. There is a contrast in colours in the
photo john is completely naked therefore he is
more natural where Yoko is fully clothed in dark
toned material. The texture of the photo is soft
and warm as John skin looks very smooth and
because they so close it shows warmth and love.
4Sebastian Kim Fashion
This photo is artistic and professional. The
lighting is harsh and artificial it is unclear
at what time of day it was taken. Also, the small
light in the right bottom corner of the picture
gives off the idea that the photo was taken in a
tunnel or underground. There is a contrast in the
dark colours of the background and the model in
the photo. The model is pale and is wearing a
white gown and has light hair. She stands out
against the dark black bricks in the background
of the photo. The bricks in the photos have a
repetition in their shape, they also create a
contrast in the texture. The contrast in the
texture is the light and feathery look of the
models dress against the harsh, cold and heavy
bricks in the background. The main focus of the
photo is the model because she is in the middle
of the photo and the colours she is wearing makes
her stand out to the eye. The effect of this
photo is that the model is descending from
somewhere out of the shot, giving her an angelic
vibe. Also, I feel it represent finding good
things in unexpected and dark places.
5Don McCullin War
Shot in 1968, this is Don McCullins most iconic
photo. The objective of the photo is to show the
realness of war, the man in this photo could be
staring at something horrific and the audience
wouldnt know. The man could be staring at noting
and the audience would never know, all we see is
a man in fear. Even though the photo is in black
and white the light in the background tells us
that it was during the day when the photo was
taken. This photo is documentary photography. The
focus of the photo is the army man who takes of
the majority of the photo. However, within the
army man there is a main focus on his face and
his posture he is in a state of shock and his
posture seems as if he trying to make himself
smaller in order to protect himself. The mode of
address in this photo is indirect as the army man
is looking off into the distance behind the
photographer. The photo gives off a cold feeling
as the black and white makes the photo seem more
simple and the position of the man looks like he
is trying to keep warm. There is a realisation to
the viewer of the photo that being in the army
takes a toll on people.
6Christopher Barroccu Weddings
This is a commercial photo. The lighting is soft
and the majority of the light is coming from the
background sparklers and what seems to be a
building next to where the people are standing.
The lighting gives the viewer a clear idea of
what time of day it is. The lightest value of the
photo is the wedding dress and the sparklers as
they're the lighter colours in the photo. The
darkest values are the grooms suit and the night
sky in the background. The texture of the photo
is soft and warm. There is a contrast in the
sparklers and the night sky because the sparklers
are the main source of the light in the
photo. When looking at the photo there is a
warmness to it because of the sparklers and the
group of people being close together.
7Mario Testino Editorial
The lighting in this photo is very soft to match
the pastel colours on the model, the background
and the magazine font. The central focus of the
picture is the model because she is the largest
thing on the photo. The angle of the photo is a
head on angle. The light in the photo is
artificial so it is difficult to tell what time
of day the photo was taken. The texture of this
photo is very soft and fluffy because of the
pastel colours on the model and the background
colour. The model has very feminine and angelic
vibe and looks quite 1040's/1950's. There is a
softness to the movement of the model curls. The
main focus of the photo is the model because her
yellow dress and brown hair make her stand out
against the rose pink background.
