Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2,
1869 and it is a national holiday in India. His
non-violence or Satyagraha continues to
influence political leaders. Gandhi Jayanti is
announced as International Day of non-violence by
United Nations.

4How people celebrate every year?
- Showing Films and Book readings on Gandhi's
achievements. - Presentation of awards.
- In schools and colleges they conduct programs
and skits showing the life of mahatma. - Prayer services, tributes on that day all over
India - And many people will avoid eating non vegetarian
and alcohols on that day.
5What is Special in 2014?
- Every year, government offices and most
businesses are closed so people have a day off
work. From this year, every government officers
have to carry cleaning 100hours per year. - Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered
government officials to work on mahatma Gandhi's
birthday to clean the ministries in a national
wide cleanliness drive - He planned to launch the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan"
on October 2, which is the way to eradicate the
hygiene related diseases and sanitation problems
due to overflowing of garbage in many cities.
6- The clean India mission aims at making India a
clean country by 2019, coinciding the 150th
anniversary of mahatma Gandhi. Modi is the first
Indian prime minister to take an effort to fix
the problems due to shortage of toilets in India
and clean the country. - The circular says that, all the government
offices will be open till noon and oath will be
administered at 9.45 am on Gandhi Jayanthi.
He asked the audience "Mahatma Gandhi did so
much for our country. What have we given him in
return?" and "Let's make a pledge that we will
give back the Father of our Nation, a clean
country, as he had desired. Let this be our goal
for 2019".
7Cleanliness Pledge
It is our duty that I will clean the country to
serve Mother India. I take oath that I will
remain conscious about sanitary practices and
devote time for that. I will devote 100 hours
every year meaning two hours every week for
reaching this goal. I will start the cleanliness
drive from myself, my family, my neighbourhood
and my workplace. I believe that countries which
are clean because their citizens believe in
sanitary practices. The pledge that I am taking,
I will administer to 100 others. I will try that
those 100 also work towards hygiene and
