4The basic principle of ayurveda rests on the
perfect balance of the three Doshas or
elemental substances in a human body ie Vata,
Pitha Kapha. Diagnosis is an eight pronged
approach and treatments are prescribed to bring
about a balance in the body. Medicines are
generally plant based and few are animal based.
Some medicines contain minerals too. Use of oils
massages with medicated oils are also
prescribed.

5People from all over the world come to Kerala to
experience the power of kerala ayurveda. Tourists
visiting India and especially Kerala indulge in
the rejuvenation therapies available. Kerala is
dotted with ayurvedic resorts, and hospitals with
a resort like ambience that offer therapies both
long as well as short term. Ayurvedic
treatments are generally performed on days in
multiples of 3, ie either 3 days, 7 days, 21
days etc. Proper consultation is sought from an
ayurvedic doctor or practitioner, who prescribes
the treatments, massages, medicines, and an
appropriate diet. Satvic food is generally
advised, which is mainly vegetarian with the
avoidance of dairy too.

7It is a ritual with traditional Indians to
undergo a sukhachikilsa or rejuvenation therapy
for 7 days at the onset of the monsoons in June
every year. The body is said to be at its most
tender condition and best to receive the
medication it is provided. This yearly ritual
keeps the mind and body agile and pain free for
long periods. Shirodhara for cooling the head
is yet another therapy for cooling of the head,
relaxing the mind, sinusitis and various other
ills. A continuous stream of medicated oil is
poured onto the forehead in a steady stream.
