3ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT BY INJECTIONS --
Description-- Anti-wrinkle injections are
designed to improve the look of lines and
wrinkles. They involve the injection of a
prescription medicine into the muscles and work
by blocking nerve impulses to those muscles.
This reduces the muscle activity which causes
moderate to severe lines to form and is perfect
for dynamic wrinkles (those wrinkles which are
accentuated through movement) such as frown
lines, forehead lines and crows feet.
Botox/ Dysport is a natural protein that relaxes
muscles to improve expression lines.
They work by precisely inhibiting the nerve
impulses which cause these tiny facial muscles
to contract.
No sedation or anaesthetic is required, you will
be able to drive and resume normal
activities after treatment.
Botox is contraindicated if you are pregnant,
breast feeding or planning to fall pregnant.
Botox is not suitable for those with certain
neurological or muscular disorders.(Unless a
referral is given youre your specialist)
Botox should be postponed in the presence of
infection near the treatment area
Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax the
muscles which allow wrinkles to disappear
or prevent wrinkles from forming. The most common
area that anti-wrinkle injections are used are
in the brow, between the eyebrows for scowl
lines and for the crows feet around the eyes.
Anti wrinkle injections are also used to
control hyperactive sweat glands,
hyperhydrosis, headaches and blepharospasm or
twitching of the eyes.
4WHAT TYPES OF ANTI-WRINKLES?
There are a number of different types of
treatment for reducing the appearance of fine
lines and wrinkles. Common procedures include
muscle relaxants and dermal fillers.
Muscle Relaxants Muscle relaxing injections use
the botulinum toxin to block the nerve impulses
that cause muscle contraction. They are a popular
temporary non-surgical anti-wrinkle treatment.
Relaxants work by blocking the nerve impulses
that cause muscle contraction, leading to
smoother looking skin.
Muscle relaxants are medicines that are used to
prevent and reduce muscle spasms and
spasticity. Muscle spasms occur when there is an
uncontrolled (involuntary) contraction of a group
of muscles. The muscles usually shorten
(contract) suddenly this is often painful.
Spasticity occurs when some muscles contract
tightly and can then become stiff and
harder to use. Muscle relaxants are sometimes
referred to as spasmolytics.
Dermal Fillers Fillers (such as Juvéderm are
used to plump out wrinkles and laughter lines
in the face. Juvéderm- made from hyaluronic acid
(which naturally occurs in the skin) is a non-
surgical treatment frequently used for smile
lines.
Dermal fillers are becoming increasingly
popular as a means to help reverse the
changes associated with aging. Because the goal
is to return the dermis to its original youthful
state, dermal fillers can give a more natural
appearance than surgical face lifts.
Dermal fillers are becoming increasingly

is to return the dermis to its original youthful

fillers are being used to reduce or eliminate
wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips,
and replace soft-tissue
volume
loss.
Both types of anti-wrinkle injections take about
15 minutes to complete, but this can
vary depending on the number of wrinkles treated.
Muscle relaxants generally take effect over a
week or two and last three to four months,
whilst dermal fillers can last for up to a year.
5AFTER THE ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS --
As anti-wrinkle treatment by injection is a
non-surgical treatment, there is virtually no
recovery time after treatment, meaning you can
normally fit in your injections with your
day-to-day activities.
Are anti-wrinkle injections available on the NHS?
The NHS will only consider cosmetic treatment in
specific circumstances, and generally this only
applies to surgery. Therefore, anti-wrinkle
treatment by injection will normally only be
administered from a private hospital or clinic,
such as Spire Healthcare.
HOW ARE ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS DIFFERENT -
The principle behind these anti-wrinkle
injections is quite different to that behind
other wrinkle reduction treatments. Both
fraxel laser treatment and dermal fillers
work on an ultimately mechanical basis - that
of lifting and filling in facial volume in order
to fill out wrinkles.
Anti-wrinkle injections work on a biological
basis blocking the signal from the brain which
tells your wrinkle-causing muscles to contract.
Anti Wrinkle Injections Different Types
Hylaform injection
It is an hyaluronic acid filler that is effective
in treating wrinkles that occur in the lip and
cheek area. Once when injected into the dermis
layer of the skin it binds to water and shows
immediate results. This gets absorbed into the
body gradually and there is a need to take this
filler regularly for every six months in order
to achieve best results. Some most common side
effects seen in case of this filler include
redness and bruising. However, these effects last
only for a short period of time.
Restylane injection
It is a most widely used injection that is non
animal based and obtained from streptococcus bacte
ria. It is approved by FDA for usage and lasts
for about 6 months. Most common side
6effects of this injection include redness and
pain at the injected site. An inflammatory
reaction may also occur.
Juvederm injection
It is also approved by FDA for use. It helps in
improving skin volume immediately. It is
effective in removing deeper folds within the
skin and provides a skin that is smooth and
wrinkle free. The effectiveness of this
injections lasts for 6 months.
Botox injection
It is a chemical substance that is obtained from
bacteria clostridium botulinum. Mostly
wrinkles occur due to muscle contraction.
Therefore, this injection acts by blocking muscle
contraction and prevents wrinkles.
It is approved by FDA and effective in treating
wrinkles that occur on the upper face. Crows
feet and lines on the forehead can also be
treated much effectively. However, it is not so
effective in treating laugh lines. The results
obtained generally last for about 4 months and
there is a need to take this injection regularly
in order to obtain best results.
HOW MANY ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS NEED --
You willl need a single treatment every 4 months.
There is no cumulative effect with
anti-wrinkle injections. Repeated treatments will
depend on the individual and our medical team
will be able to advise the best time to make
your next appointment.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS --
The usual procedure for anti-wrinkle injections
is--
7You'll speak with the doctor about your
background and medical history at your
initial consultation. Our doctors and nurses will
formulate a treatment plan for your wrinkles,
which may include other therapies in addition to
the injections, if appropriate
At your anti-wrinkle injection appointment
The doctor will map out the area to be treated by
examining your ability to move certain
facial muscles .
A large number of small injections is made in an
area targeted to the muscles which are
causing your wrinkles, each to a specific depth
and with a specific volume of fluid
The procedure takes around 10 minutes.
WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE AFTER TREATMENT-
FOLLOWING PROCEDURE FOR PRECAUTION --
Do not massage the area.
Do use the muscles that have been injected to
encourage them to take up the Botox.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
Avoid hot baths or saunas for 24 hours.
Avoid Aspirin and anti-inflammatory
medication unless necessary, as these
can bruising. It is safe to take paracetamol
aggravate
.
HOW SOON WILL THE RESULTS BE SEEN?
The ability to use the muscles will usually not
be apparent until 3-7 days after
the Botox
injection. It is a gradual relaxation of the
muscles rather than a sudden one. Although
some people do not see a result until the second
week, everyone should have full effect within two
weeks.
8WHAT RESULTS CAN BE EXPECTED?
This procedure will smooth wrinkles that caused
by frown and worry lines, crows feet and
laugh lines. Some people have permanently
etched wrinkles even when they are not
smiling or frowning and although Botox will
partially remove these, there may be some wrinkles
remaining. Juvederm injections may be needed if
further improvement is desired. This is
usually done once the Botox is fully working.
In most people, Botox will allow little or no
movement in the treated area. However, there
are some exceptions. Some people can still cause
frown lines by using muscles in the outer part of
the forehead. This is caused by pushing the skin
across to form the wrinkles.
Some people can still have a few wrinkles on the
forehead when they raise their eyebrows. This is
caused by the eyebrows pushing upwards the
adjacent skin. Botox can be used to stop eyebrow
movement but this may cause flattening of the
eyebrow and a heavy upper lid. Rarely in some
people, Botox does not work for as long or as
well as expected. Some people have such powerful
muscles they may need larger quantities than
normal to get the same effect.
Most people will see the wrinkles if they tightly
screw up their eyes, this is due to
different muscles being utilized. If you wish to
check the effect of Botox on the frown muscles,
you must try and frown with you eyes fully open.
Even when Botox has fully paralysed the frown
muscles, you can still frown by unnaturally
screwing up your eyes because you are using eye
muscles that are normally not used in frowning
and therefore have been injected. Similarly you
can still cause smile wrinkles by tightly
screwing up your eyes.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS --
Due to the biological mechanism of action,
anti-wrinkle injections are more conducive to
side effects. Common side effects include
1. Temporary bruising from the injection itself
Headache
Mild flu-like symptoms
2. Less commonly, the following side effects
can also occur ---
9Eyelid droop
Eye twitching
Facial pain
3. Weakness in surrounding muscles --
Any side effects that occur are temporary. The
substance used for anti-wrinkle injections
has been completely cleared by the Therapeutic
Goods Administration in Australia, as well as
the FDA in the US.
