Collecting Items
  • Gather wood Kids would look around and find dead
    trees, small logs, or sticks for firewood.
  • Pick Berries Children would look around for
    berries and gather them for snacks or pies.
  • Gather cow chips The job of collecting
    droppings of oxen, buffalo, and cattle belonged
    to kids. Children would walk beside the wagon,
    picking up the chips, making sure they were dry,
    then handing them to their mother to be used as
    fire fuel on the treeless prairie.

Animal Related
  • Herd cattle Follow cattle and lead them along
  • Milk cows Pull utters and collect milk in pail
    for drinking and cooking
  • Drive wagons Get in wagon and drive oxen, mules,
    or horses
  • Feed animals Fill feed trough with corn, grain,
    or hay and lead animals to it.
  • Water animals Take livestock to the creek for
    water

Boys Chores
  • Help fathers Most boys would help their fathers
    with their chores
  • Hunt Boys would hunt animals with a rifle, trap
    or knife
  • Fish Boys would use nets to fish
  • Shoot a rifle Boys would learn how to shoot one
    so they could hunt food and protect the family.

Girls Chores
  • Cooking Girls would cook the meals with their
    mom. This was a very important job.
  • Washing Girls would also wash clothes, blankets
    and other items with their moms.
  • Babysitting Girls would take turns babysitting
    the smaller children.
  • Sewing Girls would sew new clothes and mend old
    ones in their spare time.

  • Kids would spend most of the day doing chores
  • Kids would usually get chores depending on their
    age
  • If a kid was old enough, theyd do work that was
    harder with their parent
  • The chores they did as kids helped them prepare
    for their future as an adult
  • Some chores could be dangerous, for example kids
    who walk next to the wagon to the wagon to
    collect chips could fall under the wagon and get
    crushed.
