Title: Lesson 1: The Aryan Migration into India
1Lesson 1 The Aryan Migration into India
2From 2000 b.c.e. to 1500 b.c.e. a group of
herders from Central Asia Migrated to Northern
and Western India.
3One of the things that the Aryans brought was
horses. Before this time, there were no horses
in India
4They also brought their religion.
5The religion changed a little and became known as
Hinduism. There are many gods goddesses but 3
main deities
6Brahma the CreatorHe created the world and has
4 arms that represent the 4 points of the compass.
7Vishnu the preserverVishnu is said to come to
Earth when good is threatened.
8Shiva the Destroyer. Shiva is known as the god
who will punish the wicked. As well, he is
associated with renewal.
9Hindus believe in Reincarnation. This is when
the spirit leaves the body after death and enters
a new body.
Someone might even come back to life as an
elephant.
10In India, cows are considered sacred or holy.
Therefore, they are protected and not killed for
food.
11These are my neighborhood cows. One of the boys
from the program who is a vegetarian claimed that
"to be a cow in India is one of the best thing in
the world" because they are sacred and holy and
are not eaten. They are sacred and holy and are
not eaten by the Hindu community but the Muslim
community does eat them.
12One young Brahman noble was dissatisfied with the
ways of Hinduism. He could not understand how
there could be so much suffering in the world.
13Siddartha grew up sheltered. One day he left the
palace for the first time and saw an old man
stooped with age, a man so sick that he could not
take care of himself, and a corpse.
14Siddhartha did not understand what he had seen
and had a servant explain it to him.
Unable to understand how suffering could be
permitted in the world, he left home and traveled
and studied for many years.
15One day while meditating under a tree, he
realized the meaning of life. At that moment, he
became the Buddha, or enlightened one.
16The keys to happiness he know were to seek
love, truth, the joy of knowledge and a calm mind.
17The buddha preached his teaching for many years.
After his death, his followers continued to teach
it using the 8 fold path.
