The History of Bjugn
  • The municipality of Bjugn was in 1899 divided
    into three separate municipalities Bjugn, Nes
    and Stjørna.
  • In 1964 the three municipalities were again
    merget.
  • The Cruciform Church in Bjugn was build in 1937.
  • Herring fishery have been significant to the
    citizens of Bjugn all since the Stone Age. Two
    herring factories established in the 1950s made
    Bjugn become a society based on industry.

Mølnargården Museum
  • The first known recordings of Mølnargården are
    dated 1520
  • Has been a mill, farm, blacksmiths workshop,
    school
  • The main building dates to 1848, as do some of
    the other buildings on the estate
  • Today the museum grounds measures 12,5 acres with
    11 houses, a quay and several paths.
  • On Mølnargården you can find old workshops,
    birds, clothes, and geology displays

The History of Ørland
  • Ørland was an important centre of power for the
    region as early as in year 0.
  • During the late Middle Ages Ørland was split in
    half one part under the control of Storfosen
    Manor the other controlled by the Austrått
    Estate.
  • Austrått, a part of inner Ørland, was in the
    1400-1500s an important centre of control Mrs.
    Inger Rømer who lived there, controlled 1/6 of
    Norway at that time.
  • During WW2 Ørland became the base of an important
    airport for the Germans.

Austrått
  • Austrått Manor was built during the years
    1654-1656 by Chancellor Ove Bjelke
  • In 1916 it was destroyed in a great fire
  • The manor was rebuilt during the period 1921 to
    1960
  • Today it is a great tourist attraction, situated
    alongside Austrått Fort, a monument of WW2

Second World War
  • April 27 1940 three German war planes attacked
    Ørland with bombs and machine guns.
  • There was established prison camps on Austrått
    and two other places that housed 665 prisoners
    from Russia and Serbia.
  • The Germans started building an air force base,
    first airstrip was finished in 1942. The second
    airstrip was finished in 1944.
  • The C-tower of the canon of the German warship
    Gneisenau was installed at Austrått in 1942.
    The canon was tested in 1943. The canon has an
    extreme range of 42600meters.
  • British forces took control over Ørland Air Force
    Base in 1945. Before they left Ørland late that
    same year,they blew up the base.

Ørland Main Air Force Base
  • Norway became a member of NATO in 1949.
  • When the Korean war started in 1950, it was
    decided that Ørland Air Force Base was to be used
    as a landing field for jet aircrafts.
  • The building was started in 1951 an finished in
    1952.
  • in 1952 it was decided that the Air Force Base
    should be extended to a NATO- standard Air Base.
  • 136 property owners were affected by the building
    process.
  • Ørland Air Base became operative May 31 1954.
  • July 1 1954 the station received the designation
    Main Air Force Base.
  • From 1955 to 1992 it was
  • much building activity
  • NATO often uses the base
  • for international military
  • exercises
  • The Base is the largest place
  • of employment in Ørland
