Title: Smartphones

Smartphones
2
Parts of a SmartphoneThe Hardware1
  • Like desktop computers Smartphones run on
    processors
  • These are less powerful but more power-efficient
    ARM processors
  • They also have computer chips that provide for
    functionality
  • These chips allow the phone to run complex
operations (such as web browising and viewing
media) without draining too much of the battery
  • Smartphones have onboard memory and many accept
external forms of memory such as SD cards

3
Parts of a SmartphoneThe Software1
  • The kernel manages the processes and the drivers
    of the phone
  • The middleware are the libraries that allow
    applications to be run
  • The application execution environment is the
    application programming interfaces which allows
    other make their own applications
  • The user interface framework is the graphics the
    user sees from the application
  • The application suite are the regularly accessed
programs such as the start menu screens and
    message inbox

How Smartphones WorkOperating system1
  • Just like computers smartphones too have
    operating systems
  • The most common smartphone operating systems
  • Symbian
  • Linux
  • Windows Mobile
  • Garnet
  • Java
  • There are also other operating systems
    specifically designed for certain phones
  • The iPhone uses a version of Mac OS X
  • The RIM Blackberry also has its own OS

5
How smartphones workNetwork Protocols1
  • Network protocols allows smartphones to send and
    receive data
  • There are 3 network protocol generations
  • Each subsequent generation allows the smart phone
to send and receive data at a faster rate
  • General Packet Radio Services (GPRS)
  • Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE)
  • Generation three (3G)

6
Background
  • 1992 First smartphone called Simon designed by
    IBM released in 1993
  • 1996Nokia launches its first smartphones its
    called the Communicator.
  • 2001RIM releases the first BlackBerry.
  • 2002 Microsoft releases the first PocketPC.
  • 2007 Apple launches the iPhone.
  • 2008 Google launches Android.

Benefits of smartphones
  • Keeping you organised - smartphone handsets can
function as personal organisers, with electronic
diaries, contact lists, and automatic reminders.
  • Flexible working - as with a PDA, you can use
your smartphone to take notes, review and edit
your appointments, contacts and documents, all
    while you're on the move.
  • Information at your fingertips - more and more
services are being made available on smartphones,
from access to maps and directions to television
transmissions with news coverage or weather
reports to traffic information and scheduling
alerts - which means your business can always
stay one step ahead of what's going on.

8
Criticism on Smartphones
  • Critics say that with each new phone developed,
    the phones get better.
  • Some critics say the iPhone lacked a variety of
culturally significant elements unique to the
    Japanese mobile market.
  • Some phones have even been recalled due to memory
    controller problems which gets pricy.

9
Opinions!
  • Its an awesome idea to have smart phones and
    other sweet mobile technologies!
  • Prices kind of suck .. But hopefully cost will
    decrease!
  • With more research on materials and expansion of
production hopefully more of us can afford it
