1. Description of the organisation/ company

• In 2008 Nanomaterials Research Institute (NRI)
  was organized on the base of the Laboratory of
  Liquid Crystals (LLC), that had started at the
  Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute in 1964 by Prof.
  Chistyakov I.G.
• Main scientific trends are synthesis and
  correlation between supramolecular organisation
  of calamitic, banana-shaped or disc-like mesogens
  and their properties searching for practical
  application of such materials.
• It trains for Doctor and postgraduate degrees in
  Chemistry, Physics and Technical Sciences, it
  supervises graduate and diploma projects by
  students of corresponding faculties.
• The NRI scholars make regular reports at the
  International Scientific Conferences, they
  cooperate with Russian and foreign partners. The
  results are being published in Russia and abroad.

2. Research activities of the organisation/company

• Directed synthesis of liquid crystalline
  compounds, possessing differently shaped
  molecules with functional groups variation.
• Studies of liquid crystal structure and
  properties by X-ray, DSC, POM, rheology and other
  methods.
• Study of structure and properties of liquid
  crystals influenced by temperature, electric and
  magnetic fields, included electro-optic
  properties, surface tension, thermodynamics of
  phase transitions.

• Study of lyotropic mesomorphism of disc-like,
  calamitic and banana-shaped compounds in
  aqueous/non-aqueous solvents, also its
  peculiarities depending on the molecular
  structure of the components.
• Practical application.

3. Research activities whereco-operation is
sought
Use of materials synthesized with required
properties in Nanomaterials Research Institute as

• For LEDs, solar cells etc. glassing liquid
  crystalline phthalocyanine derivatives with
  required properties such as strong absorption in
  the visible region of the solar spectrum with
  high extinction coefficients energy band gap
  between HOMO/LUMO of a donor- and an
  acceptor-like molecules is large enough to ensure
  efficient dissociation of excitons into separate
  carriers vertical conductivity in thin film
  devices stabilization of LC-order in glassy
  state by annealing for application

• For LEDs, fast-acting electro-optical devices,
  materials for nonlinear optics, LC lasers etc.
  chiral banana-shaped compounds with periodical
  suprastructure based on helicity possessing
  ferro-/antiferroelectric properties
• For lubricants as additives the study of
  rheology properties
• of disc-like and cholesteric liquid crystals.
