Water Supply
  • Continuous upgradation of water supply is the
    main challenge before the city.
  • Mumbai needs to add about 100 mgd (455 mld)of
    water supply every 5 years.
  • Vihar(1860), Tulsi, Tansa(1892), Lower
Vaitarna(1957), Upper Vaitarna (1973) and Bhatsa
    (different stages 1979 to 2005)
  • Govt. of India have supported water supply and
    sewerage upgradation through JNNURM. Middle
Vaitarna Dam (2011), Pipelines and Tunnels.
  • Future Gargai and Pinjal.

8
Sewerage
  • Mumbai only 58 sewered.
  • More than half of the population in Mumbai lives
    in slums.
  • Although the slum population gets water supply,
very few of them are covered by sewerage.
  • Lack of sewerage and sanitation make these areas
    filthy.
  • Mumbai Sewerage Disposal Project-II
  • Slum Sanitation Programme.

9
Roads
  • Rapidly growing number of vehicles on Mumbai
    roads is the main problem.
  • More people are owning personal vehicles.
  • The roads which were designed for a much smaller
    fleet are getting heavily congested.
  • (Potholes Merani Committee)
  • Quality of roads cement concrete roads-paver
blocks paver blocks four times more expensive.
  • Underground metro system, underground parking,
flyovers and elevated roads are being attempted
    in Mumbai.

10
Storm Water Drainage
  • Typically a city can cope up with 10 per cent of
annual rainfall in a day. On 26th July 2005,
almost 35 of annual rainfall occurred on a
    single day.
  • Honble Prime Minister sanctioned a special grant
of Rs. 1200 crores outside JNNURM as 100
    subsidy. (BRIMSTOWAD Project)
  • The work involves widening of drains and
    construction of pumping stations.
  • Rehabilitation of slums up to 01.01.2000.
  • An amount of Rs. 470 crores out of Rs.500 crores
releases has been spent and we have asked for
this years installment of Rs.500 crores.

11
Hospitals
  • MCGM runs 3 Major Medical colleges- hospitals and
    16 Peripheral hospitals.
  • 5 Speciality hospitals, 27 Maternity homes, 1162
    Dispensaries and 168 Health posts.
  • Patients not only from Mumbai but across India
avail the medical treatment facilities in these
    hospitals.
  • Tertiary Care through Medical Colleges-hospitals
    limited to City.
  • Construction of high tech hospitals a challenge.

12
Schools

schools. Typically sections that cannot afford
    private schools enter our schools.
  • MCGM schools achieved 72 percent result in SSC
    examinations of March 2008.
  • Toppers invariably score more than 90 per cent
    marks in SSC examination.
