Routes into Nursing and Midwifery

• You must be 16 to apply and be at least 17 1/2 on
  your first day of the course
• Educational qualifications vary according to the
  type of course
• Diploma - 5 Grade C GCSE or above
• NVQ Level 3
• HEFC
• Degree - 2 A levels or equivalent

Courses

• Diploma in Higher Education Nursing
• 3 years - half theory half supervised nursing
  practice
• Receive NHS Bursary non means tested
• Degree in Nursing
• 3 or 4 years depending on number of weeks
  per year studied
• Receive a means tested bursary and a
  student loan

• Many nurses and midwives work a 37.5 hour week,
  there are a wide range of flexible and part time
  working options.
• Most nurses and midwives involved in acute care
  will work shift patterns. There is often a lot of
  flexibility within these shift patterns.
• The NHS offers excellent pension rights and other
  benefits.
