3COMMENTS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
TIM DAVIS
- This program is fantastic!! It has opened the
eyes of the students and parents of the
importance of fruits and vegetables in their
daily diet. Many students have commented that
they now eat an apple or orange if it is offered
at school or home rather than junk food. - I have seen an improvement in the health and
behavior of all students since we received the
initial grant. - We hope to continue this program for many years!
4DISTRIBUTION
- Students pick up baskets around 830 after
dropping off their lunch count for the day. - Basket of fresh fruit in office.
- After school studies
- Athletics
5STAFF
- The staff works hard preparing produce for the
students to pickup and be distributed in the
classroom.
6SPECIAL NEEDS PRESCHOOL Kathy SnyderTeacher
- Snack time is a daily part of our special needs
preschool program. The fruits and vegetable
program adds so much to this daily activity. The
students are encouraged to try the fruit or
veggie of the day. We then strengthen vocabulary
concepts by talking about our snack-color, taste,
shape. Oral motor and fine motor skills are also
incorporated into this. ie-peeling, using fingers
for picking up craisins and grapes, chewing new
textures, and using a spoon. - Not only do the teachers in the class love the
fruit and vegetable program but the therapists do
also.
7NUTRITION EDUCATION
- 1st Year 4th grade performed a play titled
Lettuce Entertain You for grades K-2. It
taught them facts about the Food Guide Pyramid. - Flyers on tables in the cafeteria display facts
about the different kinds of fruit and
vegetables. - Currently 6th grade students make a daily
announcement about the fruit and vegetable of
the day. - Future plans working with the County Extension
Agency to set up a program and possibly cooking
with students.

Until the 20th century all pear trees were
green, ripening to a golden yellow. Around 1947
a Washington pear grower discovered that when a
branch of a pear tree was coated with red paint
all the fruit on that branch were red. Today
scarlet pears are as common as golden
apples. Pears are a good source of vitamin C and
are high in fiber. For added fiber try putting
red pears in your salads.
9STAFF COMMENTS
- Many students have found they like something they
have never tried before because they have an
opportunity to taste it. CK - My students began asking me when we would be
starting the fruits/vegetable program the first
week of school. BM - All the students and staff love the fruit and
veggie snacks. They seem to concentrate better
and are in a good mood for learning. JH - I really appreciate the nutritious snacks for the
after school studies. It revitalizes them for
that end of the day learning time. DV - We are incorporating it into a language lesson.
The children are helping - spell and write the words and classifying which
are fruits and which are vegetables. NW
