Title: Skin Cancer

1
Skin Cancer
  • By Ben C, Jenna H, Corey C, and Spencer M

2
At the Beginning
  • We all chose Maya Lin as our inspiration artist
so we all ended up getting in the same group.
  • At first we thought we were going to do a
memorial of something important, just like Maya
Lin didbut then we decided it was more important
to increase awareness about issues then
    memorialize them.
  • So, instead of doing a memorial we decided to do
    awareness.
  • Now it was time to choose our issue.

3
Brainstorming
  • First we tried to think of an issue that was
important to us all and that we could all relate
    to.
  • Our idea at the beginning was AIDS, but soon we
realized that we didnt know any specific people
    with AIDS.
  • So we thought some more, and we came up with a
    new ideaCancer.
  • We wanted to narrow it down to a specific kind of
cancer. We decided to do skin cancer, because we
each knew someone personally whos had skin
    cancer.

4
Brainstorming
  • One specific way that we thought of that could
cause skin cancer is fake suntanning beds.
  • Finally, after many hours of deliberation we came
up with the idea of creating a tanning bed in the
    shape of a coffin!
  • To create the coffin/tanning bed we decided we
should have some sort of lights inside the coffin
    shape.
  • We would have a burnt Barbie-doll inside of the
coffin to create the visual effect that tanning
beds cause skin cancer, which causes death.

5
STEP ONE
  • First we had to choose what we would create the
coffin/tanning bed out of. We decided to use
metal because it is easy to shape, it burns so
you can get the look you want, and its fun to
    work with.
  • We cut out the metal in a shape that would be
easy to tell it was a coffin.

STEP TWO
  • We spent about a week and a half soldering
together the bottom of the coffin/tanning bed to
the sides. We used a blow torch, flux,
screwdrivers and pliers, solder, and our brains
    (Jennas a nerd)!

STEP THREE
  • Mrs.Kieling bought us some micro-lights to use
for the tanning bed part of the coffin.
  • We needed to get some batteries and find a
creative way to place them in the tanning bed so
that it wouldnt interfere with the overall
    project.

13
STEP FOUR
  • We had planned to put Plexi-glass over the
lights, so that the burnt Barbie had something to
    lay on.
  • The Plexi-glass was thick, and we had to figure
out a way to cut it. After trying various methods
we ended up sawing it, with a miniature hack saw.
  • The plastic cracked and broke many times, but at
the end we decided that it looked cool, because
it looked deadly (Corey says) and old.
  • We added white tissue paper so that it wouldnt
    be so see through.

FLAMING BARBIE
  • We burnt the Barbie.
  • It was sweet.
