35Using focusing tools to direct attention
- If a student is distracted by many items on a
page, use a focusing tool - Use highlighting tape to draw attention to
important vocabulary. - A business envelope with a cellophane
window can be cut open. Use the cellophane
window to draw attention to desired text. - Make a focusing line. Cut tag board
to the desired length. Hard laminate. - Make a focusing viewer. Cut a
rectangular piece of card stock, smaller than the
book. Then cut a narrow window near the top.
Fill in the window with lamination taped to the
back or leave it empty. - Make an adjustable focus frame. Use 2
L shaped pieces of heavy stock. Slice 2 straight
openings down the middle of one L leaving a
border at each end. Sliding the second L through
the slits will contract and expand the frame.
Char Forsten, an educator and lecturer, suggested
this. - Make a magnetic viewer. Cut tag board
double the size of the page or opening to be
spotlighted. Crease this strip in half. Open it
up. Using a utility knife cut holes out of each
side. Hard laminate using 2 separate pieces, so
it will fold over. Hot glue magnetic tape to the
inside edges of the 2 open ends. -
36Access
- Page Fluffers Use any light weight object
that can be picked up easily, (foam, styrofoam
peanuts, tongue depressors, dixie cup spoons,
pieces of cardboard etc.). Hot glue these to
paperclips. Slide the paper clip over the
outside edge of the page. The page fluffer will
protrude and help the student turn just one page
at a time. - Pliability Add cardboard or hard lamination to
pages to make more sturdy or use flimsy materials
to make pages easier to grab.

transparent.
