Title: IPv6 Deployment Status in Malaysia
1IPv6 Deployment Status in Malaysia
- Deployment Status and Scenario in Asia Pacific
Countries/Region - Mr Mahizzan Mohd Fadzil
- 1st Global IPv6 Summit in Asia Pacific
- Concurrent with APRICOT2003, Taipei
- 19-28 February 2003
2MIMOS
- Established in 1985.
- Main focus is on applied R D in ICT
Microelectronics. - Experimented with Internet in 1987.
- Commercialized the Internet in 1992
- Corporatised in 1996
- MIMOS operates its major businesses through SBUs
or subsidiaries - - MySEM - MIMOS Semiconductor Business
- MSCSB - MIMOS Smart Computing PC Business
- JARING - MIMOS Internet Services
- MIMOS is also a partner in a JV initiative in an
associate company operating as a CA - DigiCERT SB -
JARING (initially termed as Joint Advanced
Research Integrated Networking project) is
Malaysia's first and main gateway to Internet
access, developed and managed by MIMOS.
3HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
1986-1991 1992-1996 1997- 2002
Expansion
Commercialization
- Rolled out the first UUCP based network in
Malaysia among Universities - Used dialup telephone lines (PSTN), packet switch
network (X.25) and analogue leased lines - Primarily for research and education
- The 15th country in the world to managed its own
TLD (.MY)
- First international satellite leased circuit (64
kbps) installed in 1992 - Upgraded to T1 (1.5 Mbps) in 1994.
- Expanded to major towns in the whole of Malaysia
- Got the first ISP licence
- Introduced 4-digit short code for PSTN
- Installed the first T3 line in conjunction with
INET97 - Government grants 6 more Tier 1 ISP License
- IDC Business expands
- Multiple STM-1 Circuits outbound
- Broadband Services introduced (DSL,Wireless)

6Industry Perspective
- There are currently 6 Main Tier 1 based ISP
- All except one are Telecommunication Service
Provider. - They are TMNet, TIMENET, CELCOM, MAXIS, DIGI and
JARING - Almost all Service Providers are exploring IPv6
to varying degrees. - JARING, MAXIS, CELCOM and NTT MSC is actively
participating and undertaking trials. - To date JARING and NTT MSC has been allocated
IPv6 Production IP Address and can provide IPv6
Services
7Industry - Projects
JARING MANIS
- Implementing IPv6 Research Test bed
- Developed and launch IPv6 Tunnel Broker Service
- Testing IPv6 application and services
- Testing and deploying IPv6 Migration/Transition
Tools
http//manis.net.my/
NTT/MSC ArcNet6
- IPv6 enabled devices testing and evaluation
- IPv6 commercial transition techniques and issues

8Research Perspective
- Malaysia has more then 20 Government Funded
Universities and Research Institute Undertaking
some form of ICT RD - Four Centers which are actively spearheading RD
Activities in IPv6 Research are Science
University of Malaysia based in Penang,
University Putra Malaysia in KL, Multimedia
University in Cyber Jaya and University of Malaya
in Kuala Lumpur. - MIMOS RD focuses on Technology Assimilation and
Deployment issues. - The Science University of Malaysia (USM) leads
several IPv6 Project in Network Monitoring and
etc and under the auspicious sponsorship of
APAN-MY.
9Research - Projects
Science University of Malaysia (USM/AI3)
http//www.usm.my/
- Development of IPv6 Video Conferencing
- Testing of IPv6 over Satellite Connectivity
- Network Monitoring and Management tool for IPv6
- IPv6 Host Name Registration Algorithm, ietf draft
University Putra Malaysia (UPM)
http//www.upm.edu.my/
- Internet Protocol version 6 over ATM
- Reliable and Scalable Multicast Communication in
Real Time Collaborative Systems
Multimedia University (MMU)
http//www.mmu.edu.my/
- IPv6 Routing Table Lookup Study and
Implementation - Performance analysis for IPv6 and IPv4
University Malaya (UM)

- Mobile IPv6 Network Simulation Tools
10Government and Regulatory
- Governance of the Communication Service in
Malaysia is under the CMA (1998) - The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC) is actively spearheading the
promotion and ensuring that the consumers enjoy a
satisfactory Communication Services at an
affordable pricing while promoting the adoption
of new technologies - In the promotion of new technologies, the MCMC
has indicated and possibly exploring incentives
scheme for industry in the use of new
technologies (such as IPv6) - The regulators have also indicated their
seriousness by actively participating in industry
discussions and have sought feedbacks from
industry in the IPv6 Adoption.
11Concluding Remarks
- The growth potential of Internet Penetration in
Malaysia is growing - Internet Technology and its corresponding
application will run our lives - we need to
embrace it - Malaysia is embracing IPv6 and is still an infant
in Global IPv6 Community - We need to create greater awareness and promote
the development of applications using IPv6 as a
platform of choice - We hope to achieve this by organizing and hosting
a IPv6 Forum in Malaysia in Q3/Q4
