HyperBaric Oxygen Therapy
3
What is HyperBaric Oxygen Therapy ?
(HBOT)   (HBOT) is a method of administering pure
oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure to a
patient in order to improve or correct
conditions.
4
providing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber
would deliver 10-15 times more oxygen than if
Delivered at normal atmospheric levels.
5
  • Effect of HBOT
  • HBOT promotes growth of new blood vessels.
  • Strong anti inflammation action and decrease
    edema.
  • Increase the bodys ability to fight infections
    (Improve immune system function)
  • Deactivates and clear out toxins and metabolic
    waste products.
  • Decrease oxidative stress through up-regulating
    anti oxidant enzymes..
  • HBOT has been shown to mobilize stem cells from
    bone marrow to systemic circulation.

6
So,
Who would benefit?
7
According to (UHMS ) Undersea Hyperbaric
Medical society)
Indications can be divided into the following

8
  • Currently accepted conditions according to UHMS
  • Air or gas embolism.
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Decompression sickness.
  • Clostridia myocarditis myonecrosis ( gas
    gangrene)
  • Crush injury other acute traumatic ischemia
  • Skin grafts and flaps.
  • Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds
including diabetic foot ulcers and non healing
    amputation sites.
  • Exceptional blood loss anemia.
  • Intracranial abscess.
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections.
  • Osteomyelitis (refractory).
  • Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony
    necrosis).

9
Conditions with documented benefit from HBOT as
an "off-label" treatment
  • Non union fracture.
  • Ischemic leg pain.
  • Sickle cell crises.
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Autism.
  • Facial palsy.
  • Retinal vein thrombosis.
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Miniere's disease
  • Aseptic osteonecrosis.
  • Sports injury .
  • Stroke ( acute chronic).
  • Spinal cord injury.
  • Migraine cluster headaches.
  • Optic neuropathy.
  • Sudden deafness.
  • Bone grafts.
  • Peripheral vascular disease.
  • Osseo integrated implants.
  • Head injuries ( acute chronic)
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • Chrohns disease.

10
  • Contraindications of HBOT
  • Absolute
  • Pneumothorax or collapsed lung.
  • Relative
  • Upper respiratory tract infection chronic
    sinusitis.
  • A high fever.
  • Asthma.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Sever emphysema chronic obstructive pulmonary
    disease.

11
How would HBOT benefits children with autism?
The mechanism of action of HBOT in autism is not
entirely known, but recent studies showed
  • Increased cerebral blood flow.
  • Immune function enhancement.
  • Diminished gastrointestinal inflammation
    inflammatory markers.

12
SPECT (Single Photo Emission Computed
Tomography) scans before and after mild HBOT
sessions have shown dramatic improvements in
cerebral blood flow that is sustained over time.
13
Numerous studies document, inflammation
oxidative stress In children with autism .
both of these conditions have shown improvement
with HBOT, in addition to Improvement of
neurological function and cognitive performance.
14
The most recent study is the double blind
multi-center study lead by Dr.Dan Rossignol
Publication date 13 March 2009
Article URL http//www.biomedcentral.com/1471-243
1/9/21   A double blind study of the effects of
hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on children with autism
using 1.3 atm and 24 oxygen treatments for 4
weeks, with total of 40 hourly sessions.
Compared to near-placebo hyperbaric conditions
(slightly pressurized room air at 1.03 atm and
room air).
15
Conclusions Children with autism who received
hyperbaric treatment at 1.3 atm and 24 oxygen
for 40 hourly sessions had significant
improvements in overall functioning, receptive
language, social interaction, eye contact, and
sensory/cognitive awareness compared to children
who received slightly pressurized room air.
16
Improvement shown in
  • Overall functioning.
  • More language.
  • Calmer, more affectionate
  • Better eye contact,
  • More Present"
  • Less sensory disturbance.
  • 7.less obsessions.
  • 8. Improved Sleep

9. Improved focus/attention 10. Improved
cognition 11. Improved bowel health 12. Social
improvements
17
  • The most common side effects with HBOT include
  • Barotrauma
  • Sinus squeeze
  • Serious otitis
  • Claustrophobia
  • Reversible myopia
  • Seizures ( incidence 1-3/10,000 case)

18
The most common side effects we usually see are
the (positive negative) nervousness and mood
swings.
This is due to the greater awareness and
independence this brings.
19
In the light of this study and several previous
studies, the
use of hyperbaric treatment appears to be a
promising treatment for children with autism.
20
  • HBOT
  • Is
  • safe
  • non-invasive.
  • works well with other treatments.

21
Stem Cells Therapy
Tomorrows treatment today!
22
  • Definition of Stem Cells
  • They are unspecialized cells with two key
    criteria
  • The ability to divide and create another cell
like itself ( make more like itself)
  • The ability to divide and create other cell types
    (more differentiated cells than itself).

23
Classification of Stem Cells A- According to
PotencyThe potential to differentiate into
different cell types B- According to
source Embryonic or adult stem cells
24
Stem Cells Sources
embryonic
umbilical
adult
25
According to Potency
26
Adult Stem Cells Umbilical
Most Adult Umbilical Stem Cells are
multipotent in nature
Repair Stem Cells
27
What is the biological function of Adult Stem
cells? (Repair Cells) 1- Day to day functions
e.g. Red Blood cells (RBCs) only live for
about 120 to 130 days, become too old, and have
to be replaced. This task is taken
over by the hematopoietic stem cells that can be
found in the bone marrow. white blood cells get
replaced after 1 to 3 days.
e.g. Other cells also are replaced regularly
Liver cells after 10 to 15 days,
28
2-Repair abilities If body tissue is damaged,
stem cells move to the damaged area and start the
process of healing. However,
They often do not arrive in sufficient numbers,
or may even fail to arrive at all because the
artery is blocked.
The damaged area then heals very slowly, or may
not heal at all.
29
What are umbilical cord stem cells proposed uses?
30
Repair cells can help treating more than 100
diseases that are labeled untreatable.
  • This includes
  • Neurological diseases
  • Cardiac diseases
  • Vascular diseases
  • Muscles diseases
  • Blood diseases
  • Immune diseases

31
Already treated diseases with different levels
of benefit include
  • Spinal Cord Injury 1005
  • Femoral Head Necrosis 372
  • Cerebral Palsy 302
  • Muscular Dystrophy 239
  • Lower Limb Ischemia 184
  • Motor Neuron Disease 183
  • Ataxia 169
  • Multiple Sclerosis 153
  • Diabetic Foot 127
  • Stroke 82
  • Autism 27
  • Optic Nerve Conditions 20
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy 7

32
How would umbilical cord repair stem cells help
autistic individuals?
33
By targeting 3 main pathologies found in autistic
  • Cerebral hypoperfusion
  • Inflammation.
  • immune dysregulation.
  • In addition to,
  • its neural tissue healing abilities

34
1-specific temporal lobe areas associated with
face recognition , social interaction , and
language comprehension, has been demonstrated to
have subnormal circulation, as well as resulting
hypoxia. .
Cord repair cells safely home to the damaged
area and make new collateral blood vessels
35
2- Children with autism have immune systems that
do not function normally. Dysregulation is very
apparent in gastrointestinal health .Most
autistics experience symptoms ranging from
diarrhea, gas, and bloating to intestinal lesions
and inflammation of their gastrointestinal system
Not to mention the different food allergies.
Cord repair cells has the ability to safely
correct immune dysregulation.
36
Are there Reported improvements in Autistic
children treated?
Yes there are , ranged from improved
speech Reading learning Better cognitive
abilities Better social interaction Much less
sick Improved gut symptoms Eating broader food
items. improve appetite Happier.
37
A big safe hope for Autism and many other
disabilities,
But still need more studies to prove who would
benefit and why?
