How Highlighting Works
  • When you read, you might do so without particular
attention to important details this is called
    passive reading
  • Highlighting causes you read with the intention
of marking what is important this is called
    active reading
  • Making a decision about what to mark with a
highlighter causes you to pay attention to
    details in a critical way

3
Highlighting is Efficient
  • When you evaluate material for highlighting, you
    focus on its importance
  • Once you decide something is important, you can
mark it to be found again without difficulty
  • At the same time you exclude other information
from further review, cutting down the amount to
    be reviewed later

4
Highlighting is Effective
  • Information marked with a highlighter is easily
    found later
  • When you see it for a second time you will learn
facts better because repeated exposure to
    something strengthens your recall
  • Writing notes from highlighted material
strengthens recall even more because you use your
    own words

5
Basics of Highlighting
  • Highlighting is quick and easy
  • Marking notes or copies of articles with a
highlighter will reduce what you need to know to
    just the most important things.
  • Light yellow is the best color because its easy
    to see and read through.
  • For obvious reasons, you should not highlight
    books you dont own

6
Highlighting Method
  • Read a short section through
  • Go back and highlight information relevant to the
    topic of the article
  • Dont highlight entire sentences unless they are
    short and very relevant
  • Key words and phrases should be marked
  • Generally only 20-40 percent of total reading
    material should be highlighted
  • After highlighting, write out essential
information as note cards or outlines to
re-enforce your learning and review later for
    tests
