The fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, entered the
US on imported Asian chestnut trees. It enters
stem wounds, grows under the bark, and eventually
kills the cambium. Everything above to the
"canker" dies and stump sprouts form. In this
way major forest tree was reduced to a shrub.

Santa Cruz May 20, 2003 County will get busy
removing diseased oaks
The county plan targets about 650 infested trees
that stand mostly along county-maintained roads.
"They are really located all over the county, but
the (San Lorenzo Valley) is where the biggest
percentage are," said Public Works John Swenson.
The tree-removal effort will be funded by a state
Department of Forestry grant. Meanwhile, the
county is crafting a re-planting effort, and is
seeking grants to pay for another round of tree
removal, he said. The county hopes to have the
trees cut and removed by the end of summer.
First discovered in California in Marin County in
1996, sudden oak death is caused by a fungus-like
organism known as Phytophora ramorum. Symptoms
include an oozing discharge, discoloration and
the presence of insects and other organisms.
