Title: The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum
1The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum
Attracting People Since 1993
2The Vision
- I would have every student at the University of
Minnesota and every individual in this community,
exposed as frequently as possible to the things
that make life worth living, to the cultural
inheritance of the human race. - -University President Lotus Coffman
- The Weisman has been very effective in achieving
this mission, but in a way unlike most art
museums. - Location
- Free Admission
3Because of its central location on the University
of Minnesotas Campus, The Weisman Art Museum
effectively draws in many people on a daily
basis. It is embedded among classrooms,
residence halls, and other gathering places at
the University.
4Many of these people come here for reasons other
than art but usually leave having taken in at
least the building which is, in itself, a work of
art
Just look at it!
5The front patio just outside the main doors
serves as a great meeting place for students,
faculty, and staff of the University. Its a
rarity to find someone who doesnt know where the
Weisman is.
6People often visit the green space along East
River Parkway to do yoga, stretch after a run, or
just sit and enjoy the fantastic view of the
Minneapolis skyline.
7Gift Shop
- The Weisman also has a classy gift shop, which is
very popular with the university population. - The gift shop attracts those students without
cars a nice place to find gifts for family and
friends.
8So Why Do People Go In?
- A No Risk Investment
- Unlike many art museums, you dont pay to enter
the Weisman - Youre already there, why not?
- If you dont like what you see, you can simply
leave - Curiosity
- People become so taken by the building that they
cant resist going inside.
9Just a peek at the permanent collection
10A Successful Venture
- The Weisman continues to attract locals and
tourists by both its location and free admission
policy - With people continuing to experience art here,
many of them newcomers to the art scene, Lotus
Coffman would be pleased
