10The Importance of the Arts
- The aim of art is to represent not the outward
appearance of things, but their inward
significance Aristotle - Art is the Queen of all sciences communicating
knowledge to all the generations of the world
Leonardo da Vinci - To encourage literature and the arts is a duty,
which every good citizen owes to his country -
George Washington - When my daughter was about seven years old, she
asked me one day what I did at work. I told her
I worked at the college - that my job was to
teach people how to draw. She stared at me,
incredulous, and said, You mean they forget? -
Howard Ikemoto - Life beats down and crushes the soul and art
reminds you that you have one - Stella Adler - Art is the signature of civilizations Beverly
Sills
Art enhances our humanity and our civility
11Why does Brookings need an Art Council?OrWhy
Does Brookings Need Art?
- A recent NEA study, The Arts and Civic
Engagement Involved in Arts, Involved in Life,
demonstrates -- with statistically reliable data
-- that there is a clear link between arts
participation and community health Americans
who attend theater, and engage in other arts
are more active in community life than those who
do not - Performing art attendees are 2x more likely to
attend sports events and 1.8x more likely to
participate in sports - Performing art attendees are 2x more likely to be
physically active and 1.7x more likely to
exercise - Performing art attendees are 2.7x more likely to
volunteer in their communities or do charity work - Americans who experience art are demonstrably
more active in their communities than
non-participants - Literature and arts participation are hallmarks
of civic awareness. They play a part in
revitalizing the communities in which we live and
our sense of community at every level
Arts involvement promotes and improves both
the individual and the community
12The Bottom Line
- Arts and arts involvement enhances individual
development and benefits the community - Arts involvement makes for more complete and
fulfilled individuals - Arts involved people are generally more active in
community causes - BAC promotes the arts, encourages individual arts
involvement, and brings a wide variety of art to
the local population - BAC helps to connect the Brookings arts community
to the regional and state art communities - The Cultural Center is a local art destination
and could be more
