National Metal Casting Summary The industry
ships about 14.1 million tons of castings
annually, valued in excess of 22 billion.
Castings of ferrous metals account for 85 of
tonnage shipments and 61 of the value of
shipments. Nonferrous castings, primarily of
aluminum, account for the rest. Major end-use
markets for metal castings include the
automotive, pipe, industrial machinery,
transportation equipment, and aerospace
markets. The industry, which employs a total of
217,000, is dominated by small business. Of the
3,100 metal casting establishments in this
country, 79 employ fewer than 100 people. The
metal casting industry is the largest recycler in
North American and perhaps the world, saving
about 15-20 million tons of scrap metal from
disposal in landfills and junk yards each year
and using this waste as a source of raw material
to produce useful products. However,
environmental and safety regulations consume more
than 25 of the new capital investment and
contribute up to 5 of the cost of production.

Research and
Development Portfolio The Industries of the
Future process helps to ensure that scarce RD
resources are strategically allocated to maximize
benefits. OIT provides cost-shared funding to
selected RD projects that address
industry-defined priorities as well as national
goals for energy and the environment. Projects
focus on potentially high-payoff technologies
that are too risky or costly to attract adequate
private funding.
