Woodland in HK

• In Hong Kong, the woodland spread very wide,
• Besides, the reservoirs, for example, Tai Tam,
  Shing Mun , Sai Wan, Tai Tong and Tai Po Kau also
  can see bigger woodlands.

Woodland is one of the major types of
vegetation in Hong Kong.

• According to the International Biological
  Programme,
• the term "woodland" refers to "open or closed
  vegetation with the principal layer consisting of
  trees,
• these averaging over 5 m tall",

• While our government publication Land Utilization
  in Hong Kong (1968) defined it as "land with a
• Continuous cover of shrubs and trees over 8 feet
  (2.4 m) in height with interlocking canopies,
• Not being within afforested areas".

Characteristics of woodland in Hong Kong

• Trees are often well connected in the canopy
  layer especially by the growth of woody climbers
  known as lianas or by plants with epiphytic
  adaptations, allowing them to grow on top of
  existing trees in the competition for sunlight.

Why should we protect woodland?

• In Hong Kong, every where you go and there are
  many extremely tall trees right in the
  city.  Trees are literally everywhere.  We must
  protect trees .We should always cut trees.
  Eco-awareness is very important for our earth and
  descendant.
