The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, in
partnership with End of Life Vehicle Solutions
(ELVS), a not-for-profit organization, is
encouraging salvage yards to remove mercury

A below-ground gray water cistern using a sand
and UV filtering system collects rainwater from
the roof to flush toilets. Waterless urinals
eliminate the need for additional water.
Landscaping includes native indigenous plants,
grasses, shrubs and trees that require no

swales and detention ponds hold rainwater to
eliminate storm water runoff damage.http//www.dn

16How does the Lewis and Clark building reduce the
need for heating and cooling?
External above-window pre-cast concrete light
shelves allow penetration of sunlight during the
winter months and help heat the building. They
also shade floors below during the summer months
to eliminate both heat gain and uncomfortable
working conditions. On the south side of the
building there are sun shades to minimize direct
sunlight. Read more about the green building at

18Does the department deal with shipwrecks?
Shipwrecks, unmarked human burials and other
archaeological sites all fall under the
jurisdiction of the State Historic Preservation
Office. An important part of Missouris historic
preservation effort is the recordation of
archaeological sites. Those wishing to document
and report archaeological sites for inclusion in

The yellow quadrant features a bird passing in
front of the sun, symbolizing the protection of
our clean air for the survival of all, and the
protection and use of renewable energy sources,
such as the sun and wind.
The blue quadrant contains a graphic comprising
three horizontal, wavy lines. Each stands for,
respectively, water quality, water protection and
abundant water resources.
The brown quadrant represents the soils and
geology of the state, upon which the industry and
commerce of Missouri depend. A microscope
symbolizes the technical aspect of this
responsibility. Testing, surveying, studying,
sampling and monitoring depend on the best in
technology, and best engineers and scientists to
apply it.

department in enforcement. The Missouri
Department of Natural Resources has five regional
offices to deal with local environmental matters
located in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield,
Poplar Bluff and Macon. For more visit
http//www.dnr.mo.gov/services/index.html
28Does the department use hidden cameras to catch
polluters?
The department uses surveillance cameras at
dumpsites across Missouri to combat illegal
dumping. The goal is to educate people and
provide alternative options, such as obtaining
commercial trash service or using a permitted

30Where did the Lewis and Clark State Office
Buildings water tower go?
A decision was made to salvage the tower and tank
by surplusing them to State Surplus Property and
hopefully finding a community that needed them.
The city of Branson West contacted the state and
said both would fit well within their community
master plan. In November 2005, contractors for
the City of Branson West began dismantling the
tower and tank and by the end of spring in 2006
it was assembled for reuse off State Highway 265.

32The top photo was taken May 2, 2006 about four
miles northwest of Branson. What significance
does the location hold, especially for geologists
with DGLS?
This shark fin spine (bottom photo), from a
primitive shark named Ctenacanthus, was found by
DGLS geologists, Joe Gillman and Pat Mulvany when
they and fellow geologists were doing research at
the rock unit known as the Bachelor Formation.
Deposited in a shallow, near shore marine
environment during the early Carboniferous time,
about 350 million years ago, the spine was
recovered by sawing out a slab of the formation
from the rock unit. The shark fin spine is
prominently displayed in the Ed Clark Museum of
Missouri Geology located at DGLS in Rolla.
Pictured in top photo are Hairl Dayton and Mark
Middendorf. For more information about the museum

36What is the scrap tire fee?
In 1990 illegal tire piles in Missouri had become
so widespread that the State Legislature passed
Senate Bill 530. This legislation allowed scrap
tires to be regulated as a significant part of
the waste generated in this state and established
the scrap tire fee. All scrap tire activities
are done with revenue received from the 50-cent
fee on purchases of new tires. This fee was
extended once in 1999 and expired in January
2004. It was reinstated by Senate Bill 225
during the 2005 legislature. By 1995, Senate
Bills 60 and 112 were enacted by Missouri
Legislature to make several adjustments to the
departments scrap tire efforts. The fifty-cent
fee was re-distributed 65 for tire site clean
ups 25 for administration, 5 to educational
programs and curriculum on solid waste management
and 5 for grants. The fee will expire on
January 1, 2010, unless extended by the
legislature. For more information on the scrap
tire fee visit http//www.dnr.mo.gov/env/swmp/tire

development in 1992. Biological criteria
development consisted of delineating aquatic
eco-regions of Missouri, designating reference
streams, surveying the habitat and
macroinvertebrate communities, selecting and
calibrating biological metrics, developing a
framework for numeric biological criteria, and
establishing numeric criteria for wadeable,
perennial streams of Missouri For more

soils occur on about 780,000 Missouri acres. For
more information on soil conservation visit

recyclable. The insulation contains no
fiberglass or other airborne particulates and
does not itch or cause skin irritation. Each
fiber is individually treated with an EPA
registered anti-microbial fungal inhibitor agent
that protects it from mold, mildew, fungi and
pests as well as being boron-(non-metallic
element) based fire-retardant treated. For more
details visit http//www.dnr.mo.gov/greenbldg/inde

49If a compact fluorescent light bulb breaks,
should you vacuum the glass shards?
NO. Compact fluorescent light bulbs can contain a
small amount of mercury, and vacuuming can spread
mercury vapor. It is recommended to wear gloves
and use a piece of tape to pick up glass shards.
If vacuuming is necessary, wait a day so mercury
vapors can escape. Additional information
related to the proper way to dispose of
fluorescent bulbs can be found at
http//www.dnr.mo.gov/env/hwp/enf/florbulbs.htm
50What percentage of waste was diverted from
Missouri landfills in 2007?
- An estimated 46 percent of Missouris trash was
kept out of landfills in 2007. If you would like
to reduce the amount of waste you generate, here
are a few steps to follow - Avoid purchasing over packaged products
- Buy concentrated products
- Reuse cardboard boxes, plastic bags and paper
sacks - Invest in durable, quality products rather than
disposable ones - Remove your name from the mailing lists of
materials you no longer wish to receive - Avoid online purchases that can be purchased
locally - Buy reusable containers while avoiding
containers that can only be thrown away - Use sealable storage containers rather than
plastic bags - For more ways to reduce, reuse and recycle visit
