a banking center. Other services may be included.

supermarket with other types of shops in one

extra-large quantities only. - Why are prices low at warehouse stores?

be higher but may also have more of the local
flavor and may stock more regional favorites and
locally produced foods. - __________ are small, independent stores that
limit their stock to a specific type. They are
noted for high quality, fresh food, and unusual

9Choosing a Store Questions to Ask
- How do the stores regular and sale prices
compare with other stores? - Are employees courteous and helpful?
- Do signs identify the food in each aisle?
- Is the store clean? (shelves, cases, bins)
- Does the produce dept. feel cool?
- Are the meat, dairy cases cold enough to keep
food at safe temperature?
10Plan your shopping to save time and money.
- What is sold in the produce dept. of a food
store? - What are perishable foods?
- What is impulse buying? Why is it best to avoid
it? - What are ways to avoid impulse buying?
11Using Food Labels
- What are two items that must be included on a
food label? - What percentage of the ingredients in a food must
be certified organic for it to be labeled
organic? - What is the difference between a sell-by date and
a use-by date? - What is code dating?
12Universal Product Code
- Universal product code (UPC) bar code read by a
scanner that identifies the products, enters the
correct price on the screen for the customer to
see, and adds to the receipt. It also
automatically deletes the item from the
inventory. The numbers are a backup if the UPC
cannot be read.
13- The sell-by date is the last day the product
should remain on the stores shelf. It allows a
reasonable amount of time for home storage and
use after the date. The package may state Sell
by or Best if purchased by. Although intended
for the retailer, the sell-by date is useful to
consumers.
14- The use-by date suggests the last date the
product can be used with high quality. Quality
assurance date means the same. If a date
appears without wording on baked goods, it is
usually a use-by date.
15Getting Quality
- Successful shopping is not just buying the food
on your list. You want to get the best value for
your money, not necessarily buying the cheapest
foods. It means learning to balance food price
with food quality. Quality foods are fresh and
nutritious, and they maintain that condition
longer. Poor quality food is not bargain, no
matter how low the price. It may even be unsafe
to eat.
16Getting Your Moneys Worth

characteristics of similar items to determine
which offers the best value. - _________ is an items price per ounce, quart,
pound, or other unit is a quick, easy way to
compare prices. It is on the shelf tab below the
item, next to the total price. Check the unit
price often manufacturers reduce the package
size.
17Cost Per Serving
- Unit pricing is not always the best for
comparison. In fresh meat and poultry, bone and
fat add to the weight but are not eaten. These
foods are best compared by the cost of the
serving. - Determine how many servings a certain amount of
food contains. Divide the price of that amount
by the number of servings. The result is cost
per serving.
18Using Coupons
- There are two types of coupons __________
offers a reduced price on a certain item. A
______ is a partial refund from the maker of a
purchased item. - Using coupons takes time but can save.
- Focus on the items you need. Dont be tempted to
buy what you do not need. - Watch expiration date.
19Responsible Shopping
- Practice courtesy.
- Push your cart at a safe speed.
- Avoid blocking aisles or busy areas.
- Handle food carefully.
- Comparison shopping does not include opening
packages or sampling. - The cost of damage or theft is passed to all
consumers.
