2What is Ozone?
? A compound made up of 3 atoms (O3).
? Good ozone is located about 6 to 30 miles
above us and doesnt do any harm.
? Bad ozone is located directly above us and
can cause serious health effects like asthma,
nasal congestion, and bronchitis.
3Purpose
? How is ozone formed?
? What does the air chemistry data collected in
the summer of 2006 in Houston, Texas tell us
about the ozone?
? Why is ozone pollution worse on hot days?
4How Is Ozone Created?
- There are 3 main ingredients for Ozone.
- NOx
- VOCs
- Sunlight

7Methods
? Based on the measurements of NOx, VOC,
sunlight, and meteorological parameters during
Aug 11-Sep 27, 2006 in Houston
? Data analysis by MATLAB
? Compare data on hot days (Tempgt30ºC) and cool
days (Templt30ºC)

11Conclusion
Sunlight is the major factor for ozone
production processes.
For big cities, such as Houston, more NOx and
VOCs are emitted by human activity, leading to
high ozone production.
On hot days, more sunlight induces more
photochemical reactions (involving NOx and VOCs
in the atmosphere), leading to high ozone
concentration.
12What does this mean?
This means that hotter days could have bad health
effects.
Bad economical effects due to sun intensity, and
increased emission.
13Further Research
? Find a way to reduce controllable sources of
ozone
? Encourage politicians to sign a policy
