Title: Youre Welcome Improving Healthcare for Young People
1 Youre Welcome Improving Healthcare for
Young People
2DH Youre Welcome quality criteria
- all young people are entitled to receive
appropriate health care wherever they access it - Putting young people at the centre of
commissioning - By 2020 we would like to see all
- services used regularly by young people including
school and college based services . achieving
Youre Welcome and displaying the national logo.
3Key Facts
- Key Public Health indicators for young people are
not improving - Teenage pregnancy rates improving but remain
highest inWestern Europe - Mental health problems are significant
- There are almost 6.5 million 10 to 19-year-olds
living in England and600,000 new young people
enter this age cohort each year 1 - Approximately 1,600 10 to 19-year-olds die in a
year but manyadolescents suffer from illness
e.g. 690,000 11 to 15-year-oldsreport a
longstanding illness1 - Despite these health issues, young people are
less likely than otherage groups to visit their
general practitioner, although many say theyhave
concerns they would like to discuss1 - New approaches are needed to make health
programmes andhealth services more
teen-centred.1 - 1CMO report 2007
4And..
- Many young people are disappointed with the
health services available - Teenagers often find it difficult to find or
access services that areappropriate to their
needs, often falling between the two stools
ofchildrens and adults services - Many services dont always meet young peoples
needs with respect to confidentiality, privacy
and communication skills as well as knowledge of
the basic biological and psychological changes of
adolescence.

6Why Youre Welcome matters?
- Youre Welcome focuses on the topic areas that
will most effectively assist the coordination of
services so that they are better equipped to meet
the health needs of young people aged 11-19 and
subsequently drive forward improved public health
outcomes. - Young people have told us that we need to do
better to ensure confidentiality, respect, and
provide more information in health settings.
None of this is earth shattering but it does
need a concerted effort to make health services
more young people friendly. And when we achieve
this we should see the improvements in the take
up in contraception that we are particularly
looking for. MS(PH) - Developed from Hear By Rights with significant
NYA contribution - Quality criteria offer opportunities to develop
trusted services for young people most at risk,
eg, - general practice serving hotspot wards
- school and college based services
- Pharmacy one stop shops.
7Youre Welcome QAF and verification
8Youre Welcome Young People
The involvement of young people in assessing the
extent to which services are friendly to them is
crucial in order to lend the Quality Assurance
process both authenticity and integrity.
It is mandatory that settings comply with section
7 of the self assessment 7.1 Formal consultation
of Young people through patient satisfaction
surveys. Inclusion of the survey results in
consideration of service development plans. 7.2
The service invites all clients to give their
opinions of the service offered and whether it
met their needs. 7.3 Young people are involved
in monitoring the service against the Youre
Welcome quality criteria for example through
mystery shopper studies (see below).
9..
- But, in order to ensure integrity, settings in
some cases will need to have an external
evaluation by young people. - More broadly if the local area wishes to adopt an
approach of full external evaluation, enabling a
greater degree of consistency across the
authority. - The delivery of Known Shop evaluations of
settings who assess themselves as meeting YW - The delivery of Mystery Shop evaluations to
verify the self-assessment and known shop - The methods of engaging young people and the
activities will be dependent upon the
infrastructure and capacity of local area. - The methods for engaging specialist services will
also be different, eg CAMHS.
10Placing young people at the heart of the QA
process
- In order to equip the young people to do this,
training is being developed by the Greater London
Assembly Peer Outreach team with support from the
GOL Young Peoples Regional Coordinator. - There is a training timetable which spans from
November 22nd and December 19th. - If the need emerges for additional dates, these
will be scheduled for early 09.
