2Year 1 Objectives and Results
Objective 1. Reconstruct Kaufman joint
MODIS-LIDAR aerosol retrieval from various
notes and spreadsheets. Objective 2. Apply
retrieval to airborne lidar data and
compare retrieval with auxillary measurements.
Specifically apply the retrieval to HSRL lidar
collected during the MILAGRO campaign.
Year 1 results - Retrieval is up and
running - Retrieval reproduces aerosol
extinction profile measured by other
instruments. - Retrieval reproduces total
column fine mode fraction retrieved by
MODIS alone - Retrieval does not match fine
mode fraction profiles of other
instruments

Kaufman retrieval
Kaufman retrieval using HSRL combined with
MODIS reproduces extinction profile. This is NOT
guaranteed in the retrieval.
4Kaufman retrieval does not appear to match
vertical profile of fine mode fraction of other
measurements
Kaufman
- However,
- - integrated fmf (0.56)
- matches MODIS retrieval (0.58)
- other measures of fmf NOT
- defined the same way.
- other measures do not agree
- with each other

5Objectives for Year 2 - Continue to evaluate
Kaufman retrieval with HSRL
opportunities. Understand better the reasons fmf
profiles do not match other
measurements. - Attempt to apply retrieval to
Calipso data in situations where
evaluation against other measures are possible.
