2
What is LTI?
  • LTI, or Library Technologies Inc., is the vendor
we use for maintenance of USMAIs bibliographic
    and authority files
  • They send us corrected bibliographic records and
the corresponding authority records on a monthly
    basis
  • Twice a year, we get updated bibliographic and
authority records when an authorized heading used
    in USMAI changes

Whats Not Fixed?
  • Headings in suppressed records
  • Goethe Johann Wolfga
  • Headings in super holdings
  • Roosevelt, Franklin D., d 1882-1945 q
    (Franklin Delano)
  • Headings in records with no items or holdings (or
that only have IPS of lost or missing)
  • Chaikovskii, Petr Il'ich, d 1840-1893.

10
How LTI Handles Series
  • Bib. records 4XX fields changed to 490/8XX pair
  • LTI runs the series 8XX fields against authority
files (both LCs and their own proprietary files)
  • If a match is found Series remains in 8XX
  • If a match is not found Series returned to us
    in a 490 0 tag
  • Note No 440 tags remain in USMAI after LTI
    processing

11
How LTI Handles Series
  • LTI does not change the series tracing practice
based on the series authority records 645 a
  • Any character string sent to LTI in a 440 or 490
will be returned to us in a 490 or 490/8XX
pairing even if the authority record indicates
that it should have been treated as a series-like
    phrase

12
Loading Corrected Records
  • Incoming records match on Aleph System Number
  • No match? Not loaded
  • Corrected records from semi-annual authority
updates overlay only authority controlled fields
  • 100, 110, 111, 130, 240, 490, 600, 610, 611, 630,
    650, 651, 700, 710, 711, 730, 800, 810, 811, 830

13
Identifying What LTI Processed
  • Look for 950 tags (examples from Sys
    2613651)
  • AUTH EXTRACT c 20060505
  • Went to LTI on May 5, 2006 (part of initial
    clean-up)
  • AUTH RELOAD c 20060712
  • Reloaded in USMAI on July 12, 2006 (part of
    initial reload)
  • AUTH UPDATE c 20071009
  • One or more headings fixed in semi-annual update
loaded in USMAI on Oct. 9, 2007
  • For new cataloging, AUTH EXTRACT and AUTH RELOAD
    occur on the same day

14
When to Resend a Record to LTI
  • If the 950 AUTH EXTRACT and AUTH RELOAD tags are
    present
  • Resend if you make a substantive change to an
    authority controlled field
  • Resend if you add a new authority controlled
    field
  • Do not resend if the change is now represented as
a x-ref in the authority record
  • Do not resend if the only change is the addition
of a death date to a personal name, which is
    already in the NAR
  • Exercise restraint if in doubt, do not resend
