112. APOSTOLICITY AND SUCCESSION - (page
455) Have the apostles any successors? Can a
basis, a foundation (Eph. 220) be replaced
without the whole building collapsing? The
apostles, who became the basis and foundation of
the Church, retain this significance will beyond
the first generation. They retain for the Church
in all times and places their fundamental and
supporting function.
12Since apostleship is a ministry on the basis of a
particular commission, we may speak of an
apostolic office, provided of (page 456)
course that it is not mistakenly seen as an
hierarchic position of power, but radically as a
ministry, a service. The apostolic office as a
whole is unique and unrepeatable. Later
generations in the Church are dependent on the
words, witness and ministry of the first
apostolic generation. The apostles are and
remain the original witnesses, their testimony is
the original testimony and their mission the
original mission.
13 What then can apostolic succession mean? As
direct witnesses and messengers of the risen
Lord, the apostles can have no successors. No
further apostles were called. Apostleship in this
sense of witness and mission cannot be repeated
or continued. What remains is a task and a
commission. The apostolic commission is not
finished, but will remain to the end of time.
The apostolic task is not completed it embraces
all peoples to the ends of the earth.
14 The apostles are dead there are no new
apostles. But the apostolic mission remains.
The mission of the apostles was more than the
persons of the apostles themselves. The
apostolic mission is now no longer instituted
directly by the Lord, but indirectly by men.
Since this apostolic mission remains, so too does
the apostolic ministry. This apostolic ministry
does not depend on further vocations to
apostleship (Page 457) in the narrow sense, but
depends on obedience to the apostles as the
original witnesses and messengers of the Lord.
15As a result of the continuing apostolic mission
there is, in the apostolic ministry, an apostolic
succession an apostolic succession of
obedience. Who then are the followers of the
apostles? That divine mission, entrusted
by Christ to the apostles, will last until the
end of the world (Mt. 2820), since the gospel
which was to be handed down by them is for all
time the source of all life for the Church (CE
20). The Constitution passes from this
fundamental and general statement to considering
the succession of ecclesiastical offices (cf. CE
20-29).
16 There can only be one basic answer the Church.
The whole Church, not just a few individuals, is
the follower of the apostles. We do, after all,
confess the apostolic Church. The whole Church
is the new people of God, gathered by the
apostles through the preaching of the Gospel of
Jesus Christ. The whole Church is the temple of
the Spirit, built on the foundation of the
apostles. The whole Church is the body of
Christ, unified by the ministry of the apostles.
The authorized mission of the apostles has been
handed on to the Church which the apostles
17summoned together the authorized ministry of the
apostles has been handed on to the Church which
the apostles ministered to. The Church is the
successor of the apostles in obedience, and from
this obedience it derives its authority. Taking
apostolicity in this sense, we can see what
determines the true oneness, holiness and
catholicity of the Church it must be based on
the foundations laid by the apostles. This
succession must be understood in terms of
substance, not just a history there must be a
real inner continuity.
18This continuity cannot simply be created for the
Church by itself, it is something that is granted
to it by the Spirit of God and Christ, the Spirit
which filled the apostles and their apostolic
witness, and moves and encourages the Church to
follow them. The Church has only to be open to
the Spirit in faith, and it will find the
necessary obedience to the apostles and their
witness. In this sense apostolic succession is a
thing of the spirit. Apostolicity too is a gift
and a requirement at the same time.
19Denominational Concept All of the congregations
belong to one organization. Headquarters are
known and exercise authority. Can remove a local
church from the group. Danger to us identifying
the brotherhood as the church today as
functioning unit. How is the church doing? What
dangers are facing the church?

in his own language.
23(Acts 2 Continued) v. 11 we hear them speaking
in our tongues the mighty works of God. v. 14
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted
up his voice, and spake forth unto them, saying,
Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at
Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and give ear

24Reaction in Acts 2 v. 37 they heard this,
they were pricked in their heart, and said unto

36All Christian service is personal work! Yes,
what we do together as a group of Gods people is
important. We need each other. God planned it
that we participate together in order that we
could teach and admonish one another. Our
eternal judgment will be individual. Each of us
stands before the judgment seat of Christ. But,
as a loving family of believers, we should help
one another to live for eternity.
