In the beginning
  • Lleyton Hewitt, was born in Adelaide on the 24th
    of February, 1981.
  • His mother Cherilyn was a former champion
    netballer.
  • His father Glynn Hewitt is an AFL footballer.

At an early age
  • Lleyton Hewitt began his tennis career on a grass
    tennis court at his familys West Lakes home.
  • At four years of age Hewitts mother and father
    were so impressed with his interest in tennis and
    the quality of his strokes that they hired a
    tennis coach to teach him tennis.

The early years
  • From the age of five Hewitt and his family
    travelled to Melbourne to watch the Australian
    Open.
  • At only eight, Lleyton was already beating
    opponents who were much older.
  • He turned pro in 1998 at the age of 17.

An exciting career
  • Lleyton won his first professional tennis title
    in Adelaide, in 1998. 
  • After deciding that he wanted to join the ATP
    tour on a full time basis, he stopped attending
    school.
  • He went on to win many matches against players
    such as Rafter, Kuerten, Corretja and Norman.

Victories
  • A year later in 1999, he made his Davis Cup debut
    in Boston.
  • Alongside his hero, Pat Rafter, Hewitt won both
    his matches.
  • In 2001 Hewitt won the US OPEN by winning a match
    against American tennis great Pete Sampras.

Feeling off-colour
  • From the 30th of December, 2001 to the 5th of
    January, 2002, Lleyton Hewitt played in the
    Hopman Cup alongside partner Alicia Molik.
  • He had to withdraw when he was diagnosed to
    Chicken Pox.
  • He was not able to be a part of the Davis Cup
    team for 2002.
